Sks 20rd Fixed Magazine

I kinda fell onto a deal the other day, an old buddy remembered that I have quite a few guns and when he got in a tight and needed some fast cash. I was oh so very happy to help him out. I now own a S&W 9MM 39-2, A 303 SMLE Lithgow unaltered great bore, A Norinco SKS, looks like 1964, clipped and scoped, very clean and a crosman target gun. For $250.00 I got all of that plus 2 gun bags and a metal ammo can full of ammo.

The added removeable SKS clip does not work right so Ive ordered an original factory magazine, I would really like to have one of the 20rd fixed mags. Does anyone know where to get one? I am not interested in the 10/20 TAPCO mags.

Those haven't been stocked by anybody in a long, long time.

Gunbroker or posting WTB ads on this forum and a couple others should net you one fairly quickly though.

I should add that my personal experience getting them to work reliably on customer SKS guns was mixed at best. They were no more or less reliable than any other non-factory, non-10 round magazine.

But...

If you really want a 20 round fixed, wait until you can locate one of the Chinese mags with China in script on the bottom plate. You will have a better chance of one of those working.

I installed one on my Norinco not long after I got it before the import ban when the spike bayonet was still legal to be sold with it attached to the gun. Works quite well, as well as the original 10 rounder. Original Chinese wedge shaped mag like the photo with the stars on the side (IIRC, manufactured by Norinco). Haven't seen any for sale for a long time. Some very minor fitting needed to be done and closing it into the mag release is a bit tight but it works well. Good luck in your search.

The easiest way to get fully reliable functioning with a Chinese "Red Star" 20 rd box is to replicate the feed path of the original 10 rd mag in your carbine as exactly as you can.

Looking into the open action, note how the lips and guides are situated relative to the receiver and tweak those areas on the replacement to match that fit.

It's worked for me on two of mine.

The fixed "Red Star" 20 round mags are tough to find nowdays. I saw one at a gun show the other weekend, but it was attached to a Russian in near mint condition with a $550 price tag on it.

They are great magazines though. Probably the all around best for the SKS IMHO.

The one I have works great. I had one that was more fromed by a metal stamping. It would not work. The one I have is similar to the one pictured, but mine is mead of heavier metal and is very sturdy.

someone sent a pm wuith a 20rd mag for sale, the one with the star on it. I am going to get it. In the meanwhile Ive put a factory 10 rd mag in it and it shoots great.

whatever yo do, do.. dont put a detatchable mag on an SKS.... just dont..

if its a fixed 20,, I have no exp..

so I look foreward to hearing about yer results... even tho I dont think youll need 20 shots on that platform for its intended use.

I had a 20-round fixed w/o the red star but did have the made in China lettering on the bottom. I could never get more than 17 rounds to load. It would occasionally misfeed with that amount, less so if it was no more than 15. Not worth the extra size, IMO.

Is it possible that a factory 20 rd non-detatchable magazine may not be immediately noticed, where at a glance a detatchable magazine might immediately be thought of in terms of a possible violation?

We will see.

Ive owned a good few SKS's... and I know better, from MY experience, than to deviate from what it is built for.

Why? because Ive tried detatchables,(the only ones I spoke on) and they DONT work IME...

If yers works perfectly, awesome, stick with it, but <not everybody has> the frame of mind to doubt folks who have experience with something that DOSENT work for them.. be it similar or not...

If you need more than 10 rounds, you end up spraying & praying. Make eack round count.

I've had four SKS's,and they worked ok with the detachables,but I don't like them because the ones I tried couldn't be ''topped off'' by stripper clips.I went back to useing mine the way it was designed.Better for prone fire anyways.

sorry King, its tricky to "listen" to text and to say I lack a credible opinion, or experience, because it is different than yers.. well I guess yer opinion is where discussion stops.

I merely said I, as in ME.... I had feed issues with a detatchable...

Id gladly 'read' about yer experience, but Ill also gladly remind you, that yer not the only one who has experience with an SKS.. Im not alone in having a detatchable fail to feed... and for me it did. the thing just wouldnt seat properly, in either the Yugo, or Norinko...

mabey the 20 rounder I had was foriegn, and perhaps a US built mag would have worked better.. but I, meaning me.. I think that the 2 SKS's I still own, will remain with their stock 10 rd fixed mags..

if you like detatchables, and have good exp with them, keep using them.. to each their own

It,s here and its on the gun, may get a chance to shoot it this weekend. I had to take a razor knife and shave a wee bit off each side of the stock opening then it went right in. Looks cool.
