I finally got a Yugo SKS at the HGCA gun show in Houston today. The best price was $125 after tax for what seems to be a decent rifle. There were 8 or 10 tables selling SKS rifles. At least half had them under $150. Lots of WASR's and some SAR's. I don't think I have ever seen that many SKS's and AK's at that gun show (though I probably wouldn't have noticed a few years ago). I just thought it was the best SKS prices I have seen in this area recently. There was a pretty good crowd too. Sold a Ruger Mk II to pay for the SKS so I thought I got out with a good exchange.

I just got though wiping cosmoline off all the parts. My next step is the spray cleaner on everything and then try to punch out that pin to disassemble the bolt. I have heard that is a chore and a half.

To put in a plug for my cousin, Lonestar Gun Safes is set up there and has a Champion safe that survived a fire. He said he had not yet shipped it back to the manufacturer for credit after supplying the replacement safe. The inside was in pretty good condition. I was impressed. Good for me too since I already have one. :)

Question: Has anyone tried to install a peep sight on their SKS? I saw this link on another site. It looked like a good idea. I don't care for that leaf site.

One other thing I will mention is that I saw an awful lot of M1 Garands at the show. Most were predictably overpriced (compared to CMP), but there were quite a few of them. I am not sure if this has always been the case here or if it is a newer thing.

Haven't tried that one specifically, but have used the Williams and it worked very well. That looks like a pretty slick setup if it will hold zero.

How was the rest of the show?

Mojo sights rock. I have one on a M48A and will soon have one on my SKS.

BTW....Tech Sights on a Yugo SKS require a permanent mod.....The disassembly lever doesn't come all the way out.

I forgot about the MOJO stuff. Those look pretty good and fit right with the other sights. That might be a better option. Hate to have to cut anything. We'll see.

The rest of the show was pretty good. Good crowd and lots of tables and stuff to look at. My Dad said he noticed lots of people walking around with military style firearms. More than usual at least. I guess recent events have made a small impact. Saw several M14 pattern rifles for sale. I usually don't see too many of those. Saw one SAR-3 for $375. The rest of the AK's looked like WASR's. One guy had a VEPR K, but didn't have a price listed. Arsenal was there, but they always display the higher priced stuff. I think that is why I never looked to hard at their stuff previously. I saw some L1A1's, but not too many FAL or HK G3 types. Lots of AR's, but that is normal. One table had a S&W 8-shot revolver in .357 mag. I hadn't seen that before. Looked and felt pretty good. Sticker was about $800 though. I did see a number of Mausers and K31's. I guess that is normal. Saw one 11 mm Mauser.

Also, the NRA was taking memberships and renewals out front. You get $10 off, a shirt or hat, and a free ticket in (essentially $17 off). We didn't have to wait in line to buy tickets either.

One group was selling $1 raffle tickets for an M1 Garand out front. I don't remember who it was to benefit. Military related charity.

Forgot to add, Mojo also has different arpeture sizes...smaller for increased accuracy, larger for quicker targeting....

I agree on the analysis of the show.

Lots of SKS's
Lots of Garands (expensive though but everywhere)
Lots of M1 carbines (garbage to expensive)
Lots of Colt revolvers
Lots of plastic guns
whale of a lot of 94's and levers.
Lots of single actions

Very few S&W's
3 triple locks (very expensive)
a few model of 1917's
no 38/44's
no Registered Magnum's
1 38-55 pre-64 ($2800)
Very little useful reloading stuff

Obviously you can tell what I was looking for. SIGH.... It was a fun show though. I will go again.

1. On the peep sights, either get the ts200 (has elevation adjustment) or go with the mojo sights.
2. To get the cosmoline out of the wood, you will need to heat it up to about 150. Some people wrap it in towels and leave it in a car in the sun all day. I used a steamer designed for doing cleaning jobs around the house. The steamer also worked on the metal parts. It really melted that cosmoline.
3. To disassemble the bolt. You will need a good steel punch. I have some cheap ones, and the bolt bent them. But, if your Yugo came with the SKS kit in the hidden stock holder, the punch in there will work.

Oh, if you decide to get a scope mount for your SKS, use the one from these guys:

It's the most secure short of drilling and tapping the receiver.

The Mojo looks like the easiest to install. I'll wait until at least the first range session. Need to make sure I can hit something with the regular sights first.

It did come with accessories and that little punch. I don't have many tools and just a little hammer and a fence tool. It wasn't getting it done. I need to run by Home Depot today anyway so I'll look for a bigger hammer.

I never dissasembled the bolt on mine...I just hit it with a solid shot of Gunk Out or something.

Well, I wiped it down, soaked in hot water for a few minutes, hit it with Hoppes bore cleaner, sprayed on some penetrating oil, unsuccessfullly tried the pin, then sprayed it good with bore cleaner and wiped it down. The firing pin moves freely, but it doesn't move by gravity alone. I'll try it some more before testing it at the range some.

I saw a used, Anniversary Registered Magnum at the gun show yesterday. They wanted $650 for it.
