SKS good for hunting?

I know that the Ruger Mini-30 is chambered in 7.62x39mm Soviet, but they have .308" bores. Maybe you could send Barnes an email requesting that they offer the 110 grain TSX in .310. I imagine that if they had enough interest they'd do it.

Not since the very first run in the early 90's. Any Rugers made since have the "proper" bore for 7.62x39mm. As for the CZ mine slugged .310" and .300"

As for performance on game see the sig links

The only problem I have with the SKS as a "survival gun" is the weight factor. I would prefer a Moisin M38 or M44 (no bayonet). I think it would be hard to beat the humble Win 94 for balance, fire power, reliability and weight on any day.

I like the 7.62x39 as a hunting round. I like the SKS as a gun. CZ makes a nice, light carbine for that round... Danged expensive though.

My Rossi 92 in .357 magnum makes for a nice, light, well balanced, versatile "survival" long gun. However, the SKS can take a lot more neglect and bumps. It's a tougher gun for tough environments. The .357 can be loaded with light 105 SWCs in .38 brass at 900 fps and makes for a fantastic, accurate, .22 like small game getter. A change of ammo to a 158 pushing 2000+ fps (I've been playing with Hodgdon's Lil' Gun) and you essentially have a gun that can do anything a .35 Remington can do.

All that said, when will I ever hike with a long gun if I ain't hunting? LOL I could put my Spartan coach gun and a few rounds in my back pack, that I could see, if I weren't worried about its weight. It is about as light as that .357 Rossi, but breaks down into a nice packable package. With a variety of ammo and the ability to load a barrel with a slug and one with shot and interchangeable chokes, that gun makes a good survival gun, but for the bulk of the ammo. But, there are always trade offs I guess. At least it's a 20 gauge, not THAT bulky. :D And the slugs are quite effective and accurate to 50 yards.

357 guy's like to claim this but I have yet to see any back up these claims, and NO I don't include $45 a box exotic factory overloads

I have yet to see a loading fired over a chrony loaded within published data that'll do anywhere close to 2K in a 357 carbine. My 357 mAX carbine has to be worked pretty hard to hit 2000fps

Hodgon's fastest loading is almost 300fps short of your goal and that assumes the published velocity is correct. We all know how often that happens. But 357 mag equal to 35rem: preposterous

The simplest answer to the coarse sights on the SKS is to replace them with Williams or Mojo sights.

The Model 1938 Mosin Nagant rifle is the one without a bayonet. It, as well will benefit from better sights for hunting.

The 154 gr Wolf ammo expands well on deer. It's, like ev erything else, difficult to find today, but it's still in production.

The Russian and Romanian rifles seem to work well with it.

My bullet actually weighs 165 grains as cast and it pushed 1950 fps (around there) with 18 grains of Lil' Gun pushing it in test loads. The load seems a little too warm, so I'm thinkin' about 17.5 grains would be an absolute max for SAAMI working pressures. A load of 18 grains is listed as max in one source I found for 158 grain bullets. I loaded 16.8 grains and on a 55 degree day got 1850 which ain't much more'n I get out of 2400, but it's obvious to me that the pressure is lower. I'm thinkin' I'll stick with that. I need to shoot it on a hot day to check it out, but I wanna stay safe.

Now, I didn't say it equaled a .35 Remington, but I said it'd do anything a .35 Remington would do, probably should have added "within 100 yards". It kills deer dead at 1800+ fps muzzle velocity with that bullet at 80 yards, I can tell ya that. Should have no problem on hogs, either.

It was "GooseGestapo" that turned me on to the Lil' Gun powder originally and it does seem to be a step above 2400 in that I can equal max pressure velocities for 2400 and push less pressure doing so. I think it's good for 100 fps more at a given pressure with the cast/gas checked bullet I'm using. He claimed to be getting something around 2100 fps with 17.8 grains Lil' Gun and a 158 jacketed soft point. That actually compares well to a .35 Remington with lightish loads or probably most factory stuff in the caliber. I haven't gotten that far, yet. I think I'll stick with 16.8 grains and my 165 cast, though, as it will do anything that gun will ever need to do. What's the use of pushing things? I might try Goose's load with a jacketed 158, though, just to see if I can get that. I'm thinkin' I should get close. And, I really don't have a desire to buy a .30-30 lever gun or .35 Remington as I don't think I'd ever use them anywhere I wouldn't use the .357.

Here's what GooseGestapo said about his load....

MCgunner;
We seem to have walked in each others tracks for many years, just about 1,000 mile apart!

My .357 kills have mostly been with shorter barreled revolvers. Several from a 4" S&W of various descriptions, a Ruger Sec.6, and a Win. M94, of course.

I've also killed a pig with the bullet you describe (Lee 158gr SWC). Mine however casts to 165gr. And yes, I use the 14.5gr of #2400. My rifle also shoots it to around 1,800fps.

However, I prefer the Remington 158gr SoftPt. over 17.8gr of HodLilGun for 2,100fps. It's kinda hard to tell the difference between the .357mag and the .35Rem.............

If you need further info on Lil' Gun in the caliber, check out www.reloadersnest.com. There's some good info there, too. I got all into researching it. I've got to get me some brass, though, and Midway is backordered. I'm going to load 100 rounds of it up just for the rifle.

its a couple of months old.. but this is EXACTLY the thread i was looking for!

Its great to hear that the Norinco SKS I've got will be good for my first deer hunting season. I thought about shelling out the $450 for a new 700 in 30-06... but now I really just want to scope my SKS...

To branch out a little on this thread... I saw many of you that scoped your SKS's, and I am curious what the agreed upon "best mount" is for this gun?

Ok, after doing what i have told many others to do.... SEARCH! I have found that the Scout Scope mount gets the best reviews over the replacement receiver cover type...

You cant really tell in that pic, but my SKS already has a rear cover with 2 screws on each side and 2 extras on the left side... based on the pic i found on scout scope's site, i think i already have a diff rear cover...

Now I am just getting confused... :(
