I bought my Romanian SKS around 8 years ago, it was my first or second (I'm not sure if the 30-30 or SKS came first) non-.22lr rifle. It is not very accurate. It is 100% reliable. It is a ton of fun to shoot. The caliber and weight are a good combination- enough of a shove on the shoulder to know you are shooting a gun, but comfortable enough to shoot all afternoon. The ammo is about as cheap as you'll ever find for centerfire ammo so you can also afford to shoot all afternoon. Yeah, they are worth it, so long as you can appreciate them for what they are and don't expect an MOA target rifle.
