dang... now I'm starting to think of getting one as a trunk piece. :)

How do you go about removing the bayonet lug? Can you knock out pins like on an AR gasblock/sight tower, mallet the lug and sight tower off, and then reinstall the sight? Or is it press-fit so hard if I want it off I need to get out the grinder and cold blue?

It is affixed to the front sight assembly so I just cut it off and cold blued over the stump, pretty easy. I didn't want it on the rifle I "sporterized" because it had a habit of catching on brush the way I carry it on the sling bottom forward, muzzle down. Besides, it's useless weight.

Pitbull, if you have to go looking for one I suggest the following steps:

1) Obtain your C&R license. (www.surplusrifle.com has a great how-to on it) It will cost you $30 and take a few months (depending on turnaround time), but it makes step #2 much easier and also facilitates hunting down other interesting items.
2) Send a copy of your original license to a distributor (www.classicarms.us and www.aimsurplus.com are good ones).
3) Call them up, order a Yugo SKS, and wait for it to show.

I've been thinking about getting an SKS, and putting a camo stock on it, like this one... An SKS can make a very affordable semi-auto deer rifle, as the 7.62 is comparable to .30-30 in power.

The Cabelas stores in Fort Worth and Austin always have SKS' in stock, usually $100-$150.

Grant, just make sure the legality is ok. If it's a Yugo, you can't make ANY alterations to it without removing the evil features. There's a number of threads on SKS legality.

Make sure you take it apart and get all the packing grease out of the fiddly bits before you shoot it. Search "Cosmoline" for tips and tricks to deal with the SatanSnot.
Also, you may wish to consider replacement sights from Tech Sights, Mojo Sights, or Williams Fire Sights; IMO about the only worthwhile accessory for the SKS beyond a boresnake, but like everybody's said, they're fun to mess with.

SKS UTILITY

If you plan on shooting seriously (10-200 rounds per session) get a Lee 155-2R mould and a set of dies and make yer own. Buy W/W white box till you accumulate enough brass. Dop NOT reload steel.

I figger my cast bullets cost 2 cents or less, gas check 2 cents, primer 1.6 cents, powder 2.8 cents. Since my cases reload 5-6 times or more, add a nickel

Worst case, Thats a little over 13 cents a round case cost amortized, and that's better than 16 cents a round for ammo that I will never fully trust as noncorrosive

It surely less than that 'cause I am a brass scrounger.

If you insist on using puled 125 gr bukllkets add a nickel

The Lee 155-2R is a CE Harris design and is noteworhy for accuracy and hunting effectiveness. I hit 3" and 5" target spinners with it and it's going probably slightly less than 2000 fps

I use Data 2200C (MR 223 or AA 2230 surplus spec)
