I'm ready to upgrade the SKS now. But this stupid 10 item thing is still confusing the hell outta me. I know Tapco used to have a kit that included everything to be compliant, but they don't seem to offer that anymore. Anyone know of a company that does? Or can you give me a list of exactly what parts I need to buy to be legal?

IIRC, you'll want to replace the grenade launcher with a US made muzzle break, the magazine with a US made one (3 parts- body, floorplate, and follower), and then the gas piston, operating rod, and stock. That might leave you replacing an extra item or two, but that is pretty much the whole of it.

From Larry Schwartz's Survivors SKS FAQ;

"Here are the relevant parts in an SKS Carbine:

1. Receiver

2. Barrel

3. Bolt

4. Bolt carrier

5. Operating rod [aka: driving rod; aka: gas piston extension]

6. Gas piston

7. Trigger housing

8. Trigger

9. Hammer

10. Sear

11. Disconnector, bolt follower

12. Disconnector, rebound [aka: trigger mount arm]

13. Stock

14. Handguard

15. Magazine body

16. Follower

17. Floorplate"

Have you thought about upgrading your SKS by buying an AK? Keep the SKS to be sure, but you'll likely spend as much or more on compliance parts than you did on the original SKS. You sure won't increase the value/resale much though.

kfranz is correct. The amount of cash you will end up dropping on compliance parts will quickly outstrip the amount you have invested in the SKS. The only thing you will gain is the ability to use a pistol grip stock or a detachable magazine.

If you want to tweak your SKS by voiding the C&R status, you need only remove the grenade launcher (replace with muzzle brake), bayonet and mount, and the night sights. You can then fit a replacement stock (regular, Monte Carlo, or thumbhole) or new sights without a problem, so long as you retail the fixed magazine (which tends to be more reliable than the detachables). You can stop there without playing the 10 or less game, since the gun is still in a "sporter" configuration. The 922r 10 or less parts game applies only to "non sporting" weapons.

If you want a pistol grip, folding stock, or a detachable magazine, IMO, you will have a more reliable and less legally annoying gun if you just go get a Romanian AK (won't cost too much more, anyway).
