Finally got my SKS project all together.
It's a Norinco model in almost new cond. It came to me w/ a ATI ultralight stock (pseudo folder) and 30 rnd detachable magazine installed.
My vision makes any sight combo w/ more than @12" sight radius hard to see, esp the crappy SKS sights, so I need a scope on my rifles. As I didnt want to be limited to longer ranges, my C-more Railway red dot tubeless sight seemed to be the way to go.
The only mount that seemed to be foward enough and re zero is the Millet SKS scope mount. This is a weaver rail that replaces the rear sight.
Installation was a little tricky. I was not able to depress the spring enough to be able to remove the sight blade, so I just drilled it off. Once the blade and spring are removed, the Millet rail mounts w/ a pin throught the hole where the blade hinged. The instructions say to assemble mount and then place the cam device into the slot at the rear of the sight base, then insert the pin. I wasn't able to do this. I inserted the cam first, then the pin, then screwed the rail into the cam. Tough the first time, easier after that. If you see the kit you'll know what I'm talking about.
After shooting a couple rounds to sight in, it was obvious a cheek peice on top of the stock would align my eyes much better and make two eyed shooting possible. So I installed the ATI cheek peice form Cheaper than dirt. Works perfectly.
Results:
Works just like it should. Everything lines up nicely and is rock solid. Seems to be solid enough to take some hits, but I'm not dropping it off the deck to find out. Nothing loosened up while shooting and it held zero well.
This is a huge improvement over sights. Target aquisition is easy and I can shoot w/ both eyes wide open, just focus on the dot and not the double ring image. I havent had much practice yet, but I was able to shoot 3" 5 shot groups at 70yds (my max range length) from a table w/ no proper rest, wolf hollowpoint ammo. The trigger on this SKS is particularly crappy, so I think this is pretty good and should get better.
One down side is the mount must be removed for cleaning, but it does re zero exactly if you loc tite the elev. adj screw.
Overall, I'm pleased. Would be nice if I didnt have to remove for cleaning, but the only alternative seemed to be a mount drilled and screwed to the receiver, which would make it too close to my eye for two eyed shooting. I'll post some groups when I get some more practice. Thanks for reading.
