SKS, The best "bang for the buck"

I've said it before and I will say it again, the Yugo SKS is the best bang for the buck in rifles today! I got several of my Yugos for $79.95 Shipped to my door with my C&R when AIM was running sales. Less than $80 and I had some very nice SKSs. Aim was sending out guns that would be called excellent at other dealers and calling them "shooter" grade. I got one that was almost new for $79.95 and it came with all the extras!

I have a lot of the C&Rs and I still think the $80 Yugos were the best deal. i wish I had bought more of them at that price. The $79.95 shipped Swiss K-31 was a great deal as well. The only reason I don't think it is as good of a deal as the SKS is because ammo is expensive and hard to find. I also just enjoy shooting the SKSs more because they are semi-auto and shoot cheap ammo. The K-31 is every bit as accurate as a M-1 Garand and probably more so. The K-31 is also a little more powerful than the 30.06. The Mosins are good guns for $39.95 but that is about all I would pay for one. I have owned about 10 of them in M-44 and M-91 and I am not impressed. Most Mausers are better in every way and they can be bought for around the same price if you look. The Yugo M-48 is a good one that makes the Mosins look like cheap junk.

I like my Yugo, and I need another one, but my Mosins are hardly cheap junk. I am quite fond of them, and they are fun. I am also interested in another K98 Mauser someday, and a 1916 Spanish Mauser in 308.

Kia offers a free Kia Rio sedan with the purchase of a Kia Sedona mini-van...

I choose to drive an F150, and my wife drives an Expedition. :D

They are the best bang for the buck currently IMHO, with the Mosins and K-31's close behind.

You can buy an unissued, practically new Yugo 59/66 for around $150 give or take. Name one other semi-auto large bore rifle with forged parts you can get new for that. They don't exist. And something about $80 for 1,000 rounds puts a smile on a lot of faces. Any other ultra-reliable battle tested semi auto rifle would go for a lot lot more (I'm thinking Garands, M1's) and they can't be had in unissued condition for less than 5 figures (assuming you could find one).

I used to think they were communist junk, until I got one......now I'm a fan, and kick myself for not jumping on the bandwagon back in the early 90's when the Russians were prolific and cheap.

Mosins aren't cheap junk, if you can get a good one. From what I have seen, and heard, just grabbing one at random probably won't get you a good one, though. But considering that there were about 14 million made (IIRC), there are bound to be a lot of bad, and good, ones.

As for the M48, yes, that too is another great gun. Only gun I ever regret selling.

K31 -> .308, I have heard of it being done, but IIRC only a few gunsmiths did it, and the money it cost you could buy a lot of 7.5x55.

If you have a M44 that's as accurate as my M1, I'll eat it.
That sounds like a challenge. Off I go to look for a good M44 :neener: .

I'd say the millions of <$150 SKSs are the best value, followed closely by the millions of $80 Nagants (double standard mag capacity and a semi is a god reason for almost double the price :D )

Alright, "cheap junk" is a little harsh. i'll justsay they are worth what they cost. I guess having a C&R makes me a little spoiled. I expect to be able to buy a world class bolt action delivered to my house for less than $100. I got an almost new M-48A from CDNN and the only thing wrong was the bolt did not match the rest of the gun. It looked almost unfied with nearly 100% blue. I paid $69.95 before shipping and before my C&R discount.

I paid about the same for my excellent cond refurbished M-91/30 and I felt that I got a better gun for the money in the M-48a. Both guns are a bargin at $70 but like I said, I am spoiled. I paid only $40 for my M-44s and I think they are better than the M-91. I like my Russian M-44, big boom! ;)

Dang Albanian, $40 for a M44, that's a great deal. I thought getting mine for $55 shipped was impressive. I wish CDNN still had Yugo 48's for $70 bucks :( . Oh BTW, if you think $80 shipped for a K31 was a good deal just look at my latest thread. :D

Dumb question. Is it possible to rechamber a K-31 to 308.

Dumb answer - yeah, anything's possible. Set the barrel back and re-chamber. Carve wood to fit. No need for a new barrel, it shoots .308 bullets.

Dumber answer - why change anything? Why not just shoot .308 rounds in the K-31? What are possible hazards? Hint - I did this. My error. It shot great, good group, but when I picked up the brass, what an odd shape.

Regards.
