Hi, I'm trying to locate a good company that does wood work, I'm looking for a maple stock. The only catch is instead of having it look like the typical sks, I'm trying to convert it from a typical sks into a "long ak" I would like (if possible) a maple cut wood stock with pistol grip. Any help is greatly appreiciated. Cost is not a factor. I don't want some crap shack sythetic stock. I've already converted it to accept HI-cap mags. Thanks.

well putting a pistol grip and hicap mag would subject you to 922 as im sure you know.

i dont know where to get something like that, sounds like a real custom number. but just so you know, no matter what you do an SKS will never be an AK and an AK will never be an M4 etc etc. if you want an AK you might be better off just getting an AK. if you want a Long AK, you can just get an RPK.

What Hoppy said. Really. The SKS is a fine rifle, if you want an SKS. If you want an AK, and AK makes a far better AK than an SKS. I've been through the whole process, but now I own several SKSs and several AKs.

I could go through all the details, but you don't want a book.

Well, I already own a ak (romanian g code ak47) I'm no looking for it to be a exact match of a AK, I want to have the SKS accuracy with the ak-47 feel (hence the pistol gripped stock). I don't want a RPK, Basicly, i'm trying to turn it into a pistol gripped SKS. I have found sythetic stocks for it. I want it kinda like this, http://buy.cheaperthandirt.com/49773-64102-995.html but instead of the T6 butt, and coposite stock, I would like to have a complete 1 piece wood stock about the same looking as it would usual (stock sks wood). I guess you get the picture. Buying a RPK is out of the question, and is no where near what i'm going for.

As cheap as AK's have become, I wouldn't waste my money bastardizing an SKS (I own several AKs and SKSs btw)

Look into a Fiberforce synthetic stock. I shot a friends that he ha dbubba'd up in that fashion and liked it.Think SKS to SVD.
I have been meaning to get one for my SKS's;but for some reason; i keep paying off other bills :scrutiny:first.
They should be available ,maybe through Centerfre Systems or another wholesaler in the Shotgun News. Not wood, but I DID like the rig for shooting. Durable as well.

I'm sorry, I'm not looking for opinions on how it looks or what I should or shouldnt buy, I feel this has gotten off the topic of, where to find a good wood working company that can do what I'm asking, but it has led this post to what someones opinion of what looks better or doesn't. I just would like to know a good company that does good wood work, and is possible of making a maple pistol gripped sks stock. I'm not trying to be a d*** but, so far noone has even mentioned a company, its mostly members trying to talk me out of doing this conversion. Thanks.

EDIT: this was posted before i seen the post above. Thanks for the info on the composite stocks, I'm looking for a wood, I'm sure it will need to be custom made, and as i said, price is no problem.

i understand your point, its just we deal with so many people who think a PG stock will make thier SKS an AK, its almost a default responce. im sorry no one can answer your question, but as far as we know theres no company that regularly does this. you would really need to contact the actual makers. heres a list ov various stock companys/makers

Even if you know a local wood worker in your town that does good work, and is willing to do it. I'm sure there is someone out there that has used a great wood forming shop or something.

I would find out about 922 compliance from a gunsmith or a shop just to make sure your idea for that type of stock is even possible legally... if there is no problem ask a gunsmith if they know any wood carvers that do stock work that might be your best bet. Good luck and post some pics if you can get it done :)

where have you been pricing AKs lately? Prices are going up and quickly.

OT, but how pleased are you with the magazine conversion, and are you talking about the AK mag conversion? I have the instructions, but haven't taken the time to try it yet.

Cost is not a factor.

Looks like your money is better spent getting a hugh end AK and having a custom stock fitted.

I love the mag conversion, I had a local gunsmith do it for me (cheap), I get 0 mag "wiggle" and the way he did it makes it fit as if it were in my AK. I'm not sure on the process he used, but I can gladly find out for you. I use my 30 round mil surplus metal mags and also the 40 round'ers. I'm going to write a letter to the ATF to see if my stock is "legal" or not. If it is answered and it is perfectly legal, I will gladly get it made, and post some nice pictures of it.

No one I know makes a WOOD stock like that. You will have to get it custom made. That means $$$$$$. It's your money do what you want.

My suggestion is to take a look at the TAPCO stock. It's designed to help comply with the federal standards. Use that stock as a "mold" to have your wood stock made. Just change the collapsible stock to a "AK" styled stock.

Find out if it is legal, then hit the yelow pages and find a finish carpenter in your town and see what they will charge. Probably no major companies make anything like that but I would love to see pictures once it is done.

P.S.-remember according to the ATF that pistol grip makes you a mass murdering gangster thug, where as the straight stock makes you anything but...

FWIW it’s refreshing to find someone who wants to modify his SKS with a wood stock rather then plastic. Good luck and as noted post pictures when completed.

According to Simonov.net, Bushmaster sold a pistol grip for the original wood stock, but I don't see it on their website now. Maybe you can contact them if that's what you're looking for. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Chris and Grizz22, as I said before, I have and and very happy with the AK I already have, perhaps I miss labled the topic for this post as it seems to be throwing people off. I've found someone that is willing to make the stock for me, I've mailed the ATF a letter regarding the legallity (sp?) of this stock, When I get the letter back, and I get a green light for it, the guy said he would start making it in mid June. I will gladly post pictures. I'm going for a wood stock because I'm tired of these weak ugly looking composite stocks. No one sells good wood stocks, and frankly wood will look better than composite any day of the week. The wood I've chose for this project will be: "Bastogne" http://www.wrightsguns.com/Bastogne T BSM 1a.JPG
The pieces pictured are NOT the size they're going to be cut in. The wood worker I will be going through has givin me a pretty fair price compaired to the website of vendors one of you posted ($200 less for local carp.) So I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that my SKS will be legal in the config I'm going for. Again, I'm not going for a "SKS to AK47 exact match, only want it to have the AK looking 1 piece stock. (imagine a butt, lower reciever, and hand guard as 1 full peice of wood on a AK, That is the look i'm gong for)
I really thank you for your help, It is greatly appreciated.

Before the SKS accessory craze began in the '90s,the only place you could find a "sporter" stock for an SKS was The Sportsman's Den. At that time they offered a full length wood stock with a pistol grip and palm swell fore-end. I had a catalog but discarded it long ago. This sounds like what you are looking for. I did a search but can no longer locate them. Maybe someone else remembers them?
