My buddy has one that his father passed down, I've only put about 15 rounds through it myself and every round was awesome. Very mild well mannered gun.

I am saving for one currently and to be honest I love the original wood stock, adds some heft to it and keeps it very behaved at the range, ammunition is cheap as well.

TUL Ammo makes a nice smoke when fired in this gun, a real hoot!

Lot's of after market as well.

gottal love the sks, especially if they accepts ak47 mags:) heres my sks m, but since added a chinese fiberglass stock and vented HG

USSR made SKS worked better than the Mini30 I had and at the time more firepower, too.
I have found the SKS to be more accurate with ammo having bullets 0.311 than 0.308, like those made in the USA.
I also must say that the more stuff you add or change the less reliable the SKS becomes and the folding bayonet works as a monopod.

Super little rifles, cheap, reliable, accurate enough for bush hunting, my type 56 is unaltered, start tricking them out and they cost big dollars, and dont work any better. Mine has taken scores of pigs and a few red deer out to around 150m, as far as I feel comfortable with tangent sights. Only had to double tap once or twice on running piggies.

I have a Yugo 59/66, yeah the one with all the grenade launcher stuff. I find I can reload with the 10-round stripper clips fairly fast, faster than guys with the detachable 'duckbill' magazines. and it ALWYAS goes "Bang!" on request.

The new Promag works great. I get occasional malfunctions with the Tapcos, but it's really mostly recreational shooting. I got a Yugo and tapcoed it out to be my over the handlebars atv drag through the sagebrush and not feel bad about it gun.

The singlebest improvement I put on it was to add a Techsight and a thinner front sight post. That about DOUBLED the accuracy.

Before mljdeckard beat me to it, were most of you guys aware of the Tech Sight option? Just one click away.
People seem to compare the SKS as if it can use only one type of iron sights.

There were two versions available for the SKS when I bought mine in late '11.
