I was wondering, what is the best place to get SKS's and clips at the cheapest price? I see that AIM sells them with free shipping with grades ranging from $110 - $150. Are these the best values of the money? Has anyone here purchased one of these rifles? If so, what grade and how was the condition? Do they all come with bayonets, gernade launchers, and GL sights?

Where is a cheap place to get SKS clips??

AIM is a-OK. my Yugo SKS had all the "goodies", and I swear it was brand new, unfired. Get a case of ammo from them too.

I second the recomendation for AIM surplus. I've got two "Unissued" Yugos from them. One's from this batch and one from the previous(two different importers). They are both like brand new rifles. You can also get a matched log book with them. Of course, they are written in Serbian, but it's a nice accessory if you are a collector.

The Interordanance Yugos I've seen are very pretty also, but AIM's got better customer support.

CDNN (www.cdnninvestments.com) is the best place to get SKS strippers. They have nice slick blued ones for a good price. All the others seem to have parkerized which don't work as smoothly. I bought a pack of 20 from CDNN, and once I tried them, I went back and bought a 100 pack.

Which grade did you buy, Dave P? Would the worst $100 grade has a shoddy shot out barrel?

I am buying the Yugo SKS's with a 10 round fixed mag. Now I have heard that there is a way to switch out the 10 round mag with a 20 or even 30 round fixed mag. Is this true? If so how easy is it to do? Where is a good place to buy such mags? Thanks again!!

Why not just buy a SAR-1 AK and be done with it rather than honeyfuggling a SKS to accept high-caps that are significantly costlier than AK mags? Sure, the AK costs a bit more, but you'll make the extra money back in the money you save on mags.

Another reccomendation for AIM. Have bought two Yugos from them, a "like new" and a "gunsmith special" and BOTH exceeded my expectations. In fact, the "gunsmith special" would rate as a Good to Verry Good in my book. I can't make any promises, but I would bet dollars to donut holes that the "shooter" grade that they have right now is a fantastic buy.

As for 20-30 rd magazines for these things, there are lots of sources, but I have heard lots of mixed reviews of all. Pretty much it sounds like the luck of the draw if they work or not. Personally I am sticking with the fixed mag and getting more proficient with the stripper clips. There are better ways to waste my money than a dodgy magazine....

Because SKS's are a third the price and I can't ship an AK to my door!

What is the best place for cheap non corrosive SKS ammo? Thanks again!

Don't some ammo come already on the SKS clips?

Blain, you can get the "Duckbill" SKS mags all over. CDNN has them as does Cheaper than Dirt.

However, reliability is spotty with them. I've used some of the USA brand and some Chinese, I even have two chinese 20 round fixed mags. I could never get any of them to have any acceptable reliability for any length of time.

There are also legal issues. According to the laws of importation(9.22r), semi-auto firearms with detachable "high capacity" magazines are severely restricted. Basically, by adding a detachable hi-cap to a Yugo SKS you are creating an "unimportable Assault Weapon" because it has a bayonette mount, grenade launcher, and night sights.

Believe me, I've tried to get detachables to work with the SKS and even when to the extent of removing all the other "evil features" on one of my shooter Yugos to try and keep it legal. It's just not worth all the work and aggrevation. I ended up selling all my duckbill mags, putting back the original fixed mag, bought a 100 pack of strippers and a couple Chinese bandoliers.

SKSes are extremely reliable rifles with the 10 round fixed mags. I've got 7 of various variations and I can't remember one failure with the fixed mags. My advice is to learn how to get good with loading strippers and enjoy it for what it is. Then save up $300 and buy a SAR1 at a local gun store/gun show to enjoy $7 30rd, $14 40rd mags and $90 75 round drums.

I'm ready for the first buy on my C & R and it looks like it's going to be a Yugo SKS. I've seen good comments about AIM Surplus. But Wholesale Guns out of New York has a slightly better deal, $149 includes all the "goodies" plus the serialized log book. At AIM you pay $149 plus an extra $10 if you want the log book. Anyone ever deal with Wholesale Guns?

Yes, I've bought a few Mosin-Nagants from them. They are abrupt on the phone sometimes, but they have good products and will take care of you. I've always been very happy with rifles from them.

Quite honestly, all the latest batch of Yugos are very likely from the same importer. Both AIM and WG&A give you free shipping. AIM sells you the log book (written in Serbian, so you can't read it) for an extra ten spot but AIM also sells them in lower grades, so if you wanted a cheaper one and didn't care about worn bluing and dented stocks, that's an option.

I've got one of AIM's "like new" condition and it is like brand new, but I'm sure WG&A's is just as nice.

Thanks DMK, I did notice when I called them Satrurday the "abrupt on the phone" comment you made. It made me a little concerned wondering how customer oriented they were. But if you had good luck with them I'll probably throw my business that way on this one. I prefer to get the best I can condition wise (learned that a long time ago with other collectibles) and having a extra item like the log book (even if in Serbian) is an extra nice touch. :)

I'm sure you'll get a nice one. Just be forewarned, you will need to do some intensive cosmoline removal. The one I got from AIM was a goopy mess when I opened the box. It's worth it though when you see what's underneath.

Good luck with it! The 59/66 is a fine rifle.

I already have a spray can of brake cleaner and engine degreaser left over from my days of Corvette collecting. I wonder if I could start a home business by cleaning up the cosmoline on all those import rifles hitting the country? ;)
