I just got a WASR-10 high-cap from Century Arms this past weekend. I was looking on the century website and came across this picture:

Looks just like mine except it has a slanted muzzle and mine has a flat muzzle. I was wondering what this is for, what's the difference, and why doesn't mine have that?

I am in NY State.

It's a brake, slanted and canted to the side, the gun will recoil upward and to the side when fired quickly, the brake helps reduce this.

I'm considering one of these rifles, how do you like yours?

Your AK probably has a nut welded on the muzzle instead of a slant muzzle brake. The slant muzzle brake is to compensate when firing so it doesn't walk upwards at an angle as much - this matters mainly on fully automatic AKs I believe. If NY even allows it, you can put a slant brake (or other on) as long as your AK is still compliant with 18 U.S.C. section 922(r)

That's a muzzle device the Russians made to help with muzzle climb during full auto fire. You don't really NEED it, per se, but it's pretty cool.

I take it yours doesn't have a threaded muzzle?

Congrats on getting an AK. They're fun, and addictive. Every American needs some commie steel in their collection!

Thanks for all the help guys. That makes sense now. After trying a couple strings of rapid-fire, I was wondering how they kept the muzzle down during auto. Recoil is very light, but still tilts a good 10 degrees per shot. I was worried about shooting over the berm so I had to fire slower than I wanted to in order to have time to bring it back down.

I'm considering one of these rifles, how do you like yours?

I LOVE IT!
Very easy to use, cheap ammo, low recoil, coolness factor through the roof, breaks down SO easily = easy to clean, etc.
The looks you get at the range are worth it alone.

Seems as the AK74 style Brake is the winner on the 7.62.

I'm decideinding on what to do.

Congrats on the WASR-10, I got one a few weeks ago and love it, I now see why people love these rifles. They are so much fun to shoot for all the reasons you stated.

I was under the impression the muzzle break is an evil feature that they can't put on guns in NY State b/c of your continuing state assault weapons ban. The high caps are all old surplus bulgarian or other euro steel mags made prior to the 1994 ban so they are ok in NY.

I have a WASR that had the slant brake on it. I recently got a birdcage style brake from gun accessories. It makes a BIG difference. The recoil is lighter and strait back instead of the odd wobble recoil i got with the slant brake, it is also a hint quieter. The gun itself is great, shoots about 2 1/2 to 3 inch groups at 60 or 70 yards with standard sights, could probably do a bit better if i used a bipod.

Mine is going to be my project gun, i think rear peep sights are next, anyone have a rear peep sight on yours, how do you like it?

There is enough of the muzzle to mount a bayo on it, but the part in the rear (the lug?) has had the -wings- obviously and crudely ground off.

I am curious, did they grind the bayonet lug off or can you still mount it?

The bayonet lug was ground off to make it AWB compliant. The WASR-10 was also originally designed to take only a single stack magazine. They were modified by Century to accept regular double stack mags.

my WASR-10 has had over 6k rounds through it since I bought it in December of 2005.

Since then I've only had one failure to eject (dunno if I should even count it as my crappy tapco sidefolder was the cause.. Had it folded to see what it was like to shoot with it folded and admidst the firing and coincidentally on the last round in the magazine - the buttpad interrupted the charging handle and caused a FTE.)

it's pretty accurate @ 200 yards, which is currently the longest distance I've fired it, and that's with an EOTech on it.

great little shooter, I love it.

HOWEVER, my m44 is QUICKLY making it's way into the top tier of my heart.

Wow! I must have a post ban model. My bayonet mounts easily and locks right into place. It's a nasty looking little bayo too.

That's great news to know about the slant brake too. Mine has it and I have wondered about the why's of it's shape and cut.

not a muzzle brake

While in Nicaragua I discussed the fixture on an AK47 fully automatic. This is not a muzzle brake because it fully rotated around the barrel. It causes the hot gases to exit the muzzle at odd angles so that the end of the barrel is not burnt out during sustained firing. The barrels erode forward of the cartridge from heat and at the end because of the rush o oxygen into barrel as bullet exits causes a hot spot.
