Handgun Sales Measure Headed to N.J. Governor's Desk

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey may soon become the fourth state with a one-handgun-per-month buying limit.

The state Senate approved the measure in a 21-15 vote late Thursday, several months after it passed the Assembly. It now heads to Gov. Jon S. Corzine for his consideration.

Supporters say the measure would stem the flow of guns and prevent criminals from distributing handguns throughout New Jersey, but critics say it will punish law-abiding gun owners.

Sen. Fred Madden, D-Turnersville, cast the deciding vote.

The former state police superintendent had opposed the idea, but changed his vote after Corzine agreed to form a task force that will examine the law's impact. That panel also will draw up recommendations that could lead to exemptions for gun collectors and competitive and recreational shooters.

NJ can't manage itself but feels that it can micro-manage its citizens. This is a recurring theme. Too bad.

So let me get this straight: they want to limit you to 1 gun/month, and then give exemptions to collectors, competitive and recreational shooters to buy more than 1/month? Who exactly is a legal gun owner that is NOT a collector, competitive, or recreational shooter?

No wonder the rest of the world laughs at us. Our leaders are IDIOTS. I can just imagine all the criminals out there sweating out whether this bill gets passed or not. Common sense has gone the way of the Dodo.

So let me get this straight... they want to make a new law that prohibits more than one gun a month, but will create a panel to offer suggestions that could lead to exemptions for gun collectors and competitive and recreational shooters.?

Yeah, that's a good one.

When they first started talking about such laws I tried it. Unless Obama gives us a heck of a "stimulus" package I can't afford to buy one gun a month. But sometimes I come across a deal for multiple.

So the "reason" they claim for this is to...prevent criminals from distributing handguns throughout New Jersey

I guess I thought it was ILLEGAL nationwide for criminals to own/carry handguns? It thought it was illegal to use a firearm during commission of crime? I thought Felons couldn't have guns??
I could go on. My point is IF the criminals are going to be breaking the law (and thats WHAT THEY DO) how is this going to even slow them down?
