Ok guys laugh it up. Went out plinking today & the slide on my Walther P22 cracked in half below the ejection port!! If I could figure out how to post pictures with my iPhone I would (Maybe someone could chime in on that?).

Anyways, just lastnight I responded to a thread defending the P22 & I'm still a fan of them reguardless. My question is I've been looking all over the web trying to find a replacement to no success. Any ideas guys? I bought the gun at a gun show & it was built in 2008 so I think the warranty is up. I did read online that Walther has been known to send new ones even after the warranty is up so I'm gonna give that a try in a couple weeks. Any imput on that as well?

Thanks for the help & your welcome for the laughs :^)

Why would we laugh? Not really a funny topic.....

If they don't warranty the slide, I'd never do bussiness with them again. Gun manufacturers have the good sense to warranty things that are out of the written warranty(if there is a written warranty) especially something like a slide. Kimber has a written 1yr warranty, but I found out they will warranty their 1911s for life, just after a year the shipping is on us. A little sweet talking at CS, and Kimber emailed me a shipping label, even after 2yrs:)

The slide is made of Zinc on those Walther 22s. How many rounds did you have thru it? I'm not that surrpised that it happened, unfortunately. Hopefully the warranty does it for you - but officially, Walther only gives a 1 year warranty

1) Call Walther and let them now in a polite manner. Knowing the warrantee is past, don't make the call with expectations or have the call turn negative if the answer isn't what you want to hear.
2) Posting pics is the same be it from an iPhone or using your computer. Use a hosting site and he img code.

Edited to add that this isn't the first issue I've heard about the little P22's.

Is this the 5" barrel model? That model was known to have the slide crack due to the force of the slide coming forward and hitting the stabilizer (I think thats what its called). The 3.4" model didn't really have any issues with cracked slides (even after 29,000 rounds for one individual), however the 5" model is notorious for it.

For the iphone get a photobucket account, and the photobucket app; both are free. You can then upload pictures from your iphone directly to your photobucket account via 3G or wifi.

S&W will handle the warranty, and are usually pretty good with their warranty replacements.

Another cracked pot-metal Walther slide!

Well, it is common knowledge that Uramex makes the gun and puts Walther's name on it. Granted, they do OWN Walther - but they are an airgun company. Everyone knows the slide is zinc.

I thought S&W backed them with a lifetime warranty?

ONLY on S&W branded items. This is a Walther branded item

I know it's not a funny thing. I defended the P22 against a Buckmark in a thread the night before this happened. It's the 3.4". It cracked in half under the ejection port right where the slide lock lever catches on the slide.

I was gonna call CS on Monday but Shot Show 2011 starts on Tuesday in Vegas so it'll probably be a PITA to get ahold of someone. I did send an email to CS lastnight about it but I don't expect to get a response. I'll try calling them next week sometime. I've been trying to find a replacement stripped slide online but I've had no success. Any ideas where I can order one? I guess I'm just wondering if the cost of repairs is worth it.

Are the P99 slides made of zinc
No. The P22 slides are made of zinc alloy, pot metal crap because it's light and cheap.......helps the .22 cycle (being lite).

p.s. - I think some of the P22s are made of carbon steel. And the P99 has a steel slide.

Are the P99 slides made of zinc?

As stated above - no, they are steel, and are equal to any other defensive semi auto polymer gun. Just the 22 version.

It is my understanding that Sig pays someone else to make the Sig Mosquito as well (like Walther doesn't really make the P22). And, I believe the Sig 22 has a zinc slide as well.

Once upon a time, the Sigma 380 was made with a zinc slide. But the recoil is higher on a 380, and the gun actually had a finite lifetime with a specific round count (I can't remember what it was).

I frequent the Walther forum, and the P22 is better now than when they very first came out. But, I personally would never buy one.

I have a Buckmark that is made much better.

K-Rod - what was your approximate round count before breakage? I'm a huge fan of the semiauto 'tactical' rimfire as a training tool - and I own both a Beretta .22 conversion kit for my M9 and an ISSC G22 'Glock-a-like'. Will follow this thread closely.

I have a P22 and really like it for plinking. Fun with a suppressor too. Sorry yours broke. I sent you a PM with my cell. If you want to forward the pictures to me, I can get them on this thread.

Hmmm, last I knew all the little Walthers were made up here in Maine at S&W's Houlton plant. Maybe it was the PPK's...

The P22 slide cracking is nothing new. S&W may or may not warranty it. A guy in our club had one crack and they refuse to warranty it. They did offer to sell him a new ones ($120 seems to be the amount that sticks in my head). He did the smart thing and put his money towards a Buckmark. ;)

The guy I boughtit from at the gun show is a reputable vendor from this area. It was his pistol before I bought it. He said he bought it new in 08' but didn't know the count. He said if he had to guess, it would be in the 5000 rds area. Ive put three bricks through it. All of them HV Rem plated HP bulk from Wal-mart. He gave me an extra mag, holster & a brick of ammo for $225 so I know I did ok in price but it still broke & I'm still out a firearm. If I do in fact have to pay $120 for a new slide, I may wait & try to find a replacement at a show.

Ok so I just got off the phone with S&W. They were real friendly but he said that because it's over the one year (warranty) it's gonna cost $50 to send me a complete new slide to my door. That isnt bad I figure. I'll get it & go shoot up a brick & get my money back in savings shooting the .22 instead of the .380 or 9mm.

JDGray, I know you said you woudnt do biz with a firearms com that wouldn't warranty this break but the way I see it I guess is I really like this little pistol & A LOT of people blow $50 at the latte stands every week because they like them. IDK, maybe that's not a good arguement or I'm a fool but I ordered it.

Grunt Medic, though I am a Walther fan, I am still curious how you like that ISSC M22?

Hanzo581,

I posted the count in post #17? it's right around 7000+/- rds. I'm sorry if I didn't clear that up. My bad ;^)

That's what I thought. Although before I bought it I did do some checking online & yes, I found some reveiws about the slide breaking, but I found more about people getting 20,000+ rds through it with no issues after break in. One fellow claimed he has 30,000 & change documented through his & only has repleaced the recoil spring. That's pretty impressive to me. I really enjoy shooting .22 semi's. I realize it's not a Buckmark or an Mk but I have a lot of fun with it & it's cheap. I've been keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a Buckmark but I'm sure I'll keeping enjoying plinking off the rounds with my Walther.

$50 isn't bad for a slide, and would fix it rather than scrap it. Would I buy another P22? Probably not, but I would fix my current one.

I wonder what kind of abuse he gave it.

I would be shocked if S&W did not accept a return on it. I would definitely give them a call, explain that you have a few thousand rounds through it, and noticed that it started cracking.
