I was going to stay out of this thread - some PMs / emails suggested I answer. So blame those folks. I am a civilian, I'm not a gamer, I do hunt , I have not taken a Training course from a know instructor or school. My "training" comes from folks that have seen the elephant , taken training via Military or some a Known School.
I Just finished a COF , main focus was THE Shotgun. We set up real life sceniros, no walk thrus, no idea as to what to expect. Just like real life. 4 Rules always - other than those - no rules. Objective: Survive.
There is a difference in the Role of the shotgun for Hunting or Defence.
I used African carry. I used a length of 550 cord, A regular Leather GI sling and a Nylon Sling attached with sling swives. Depending on the Shotgun and What I wanted to do.
If I am just going to stand around and look cool , then I am in the wrong place- sorry I don't do cool, tactical or somesuch. My gun has the action open , and placed in a gun rack or other designated area. Mine often is the one with a pc of red/ orange shop cloth to act as CF and to keep dust/ rain out of action .
If I NEED to have a sling to transition to pistol , I prefer the African Carry with GI Leather. My Second Choice is the 550 cord.
I will use a sling to shoot long distance to steady myself in the standing, kneeling and prone position - Just as I would a rifle.
IN this COF I ran - here is the first "stage" . Shotgun Only. I did not use a sling. the first time up.
Blindfolded, led to start area, blindfold removed and eyes must be forward while eyes adjust to lighting - I looked at the person(s) doing RO/SO. Blank firing pistol starts stage. I naturally turn right to my strong side... Tuller Drill - I have to shoot, I cannot make cover....Yes one can get 3 hits in 1.5 seconds. I used my SX1 with 28" bbl.
Each time the situation was different. I couldn't go "right" the next time - that had blocked, I had to go left and the target this time come from "above" like down a stairwell. I was using a bone stock 870 , 28 " bbl.
I used an 870 with 18.5 bbl with/ w/o leathere sling. I used a 1100 20 ga with / w/o the the 55) cord.
I was using slugs only btw.
My "challenger" kept getting "whacked" by the target - he "died" 3 times before he was able to get a "decent shot" to the "shoulder - he was using birdshot btw. One of his problems , he had very little trigger time, he had spent his monies on toys and gadgets. He kept getting hung up in his sling (s) .
In Real life for me out hunting and such I don't use a sling....except to get into or out of woods. Around the Apt I don't use one. I don't plan on doing house clearings either. My main concern for ME since I have experienced it - is entering or leaving my apt. I CCW for that reason. My situation is MY situation - meanining for a small apt , someone comes in - I'm more likely to use my CCWs.
When I baby sit places -it depends , most often I have access to shotguns, Most are not slung. I'm going to, EVADE, Take Cover and then if need DEFEND , while I wait for the professionals to come do what trained to do.
These plans have already been made , these plans have been tested in the home, and with live ammo to simulate the home in one our excercises to train.
I'm probably wrong tho...
