Small rifle magnum primers

CCI recommends their CCI450 because their trying to sell 'em. CCI also thinks their "milspec" primers(34's & 41's are magnum primers and nothing more.) are required for anything in a battle rifle or semi-auto. Brilliant marketing.
"...they DO have a thinner cup..." Nope. The difference between a magnum and standard primer is the compound and nothing else.
H335 doesn't need magnum primers according to Hodgdon. H110 doesn't either.
In any case, you have a couple of bricks of trading goods. Somebody has something you need who'll want those primers.

Depends on if you are talking pistol or rifle. H110 does need small pistol magnum primers in 357mag, but only needs small rifle in 30 carbine - but according to the CCI note, those two primers are identical.

I can appreciate H335 doesn't *need* magnum primers, but does one get a better load with them? (Define "better" however one likes. Might one way be faster/more positive ignition?)

I ask because the Speer manual (#14 I believe), for .223 loads, recommends magnum primers for H335. Is it likely they see some sort of improved performance with magnum, even if Hodgdon doesn't say they're needed?

OR

I use H-335 for .223 and 6.8. CCI Mag primers worked best in .223 and standard primers worked best for 6.8 in both large and small primer brass.

that means Note 1 supercedes the info in the chart. It is no different than the following section where it says the Federal 150 primer has a thinner cup, all the rest are 0.020".

ok so we agree the chart is WRONG , and note #1 Supersedes it . and they Note that Fed are thin cupped LPP , but they forget (or don't know) that Rem 5 1/2 have thick cups , 0422150838a_299284.jpg this is a 5 1/2 Rem I took apart about one hour ago , and like I said before it's right at .020

makes me wonder , what else they got wrong  there is a lot of double speak with the LRP down farther , but that will get us farter off task than we are now

OP: are those primers you got Rem 7 1/2 's ?

.

cci 400 vs cc1 450

When I asked CCI ,I was told the 450's have a .025 thick cup vs a .020 cup on the 400's. The heavier cup was recommended for rifles with floating firing pins. >025 and .020 are not the same! Some shooters( including Me) had "slam fires" with their 6.8SPC using CCI #400.

can't find where anyone said that CCI 400 and the CCI 450 were the same

CCI 550 and CCI 400 are the same , and the chart lists the CCI 450's with a cup of .025 along with the BR-4 and the #41

so you're right the CCI 450 and the CCI 400 are not the same , but I cant find where anyone said they were ?

cci 400 vs cc1 450

"Sunray" said the only difference between the two (magnum and standard primer)was the priming compound and nothing else. The standard CCI small rifle primers (#400) have a .005 thinner cup than the magnum, bench rest or mil spec.

ok I see that now , nice catch. the way he worded that and didn't list 450 -vs- 400. I missed it even on my 3rd read

again, nice catch and you are right 450's are thicker , maybe the ones going to London are metric ?? :) ??

Any data the resources Winchester primers will not list a Small Riffle magnum Primer for any load because Winchester does not make one. Their small rifle primers are supposed to be for Standard or Magnum loads (as their pistol primers used to be). Do not misinterpret that data mean that a Magnum Primer would not be called out, if using another brand besides Winchester.

Good to know about the rifle primers. I know the Win large pistol primers are for both standard and magnum, but they have separate small pistol and small pistol magnum primers.
