my lgs had magnum small rifle primers in stock and i did purchase a few. My only true rifle is a .223 gas gun and I thought I'd do a workup like I would if i was loading any mag small pistol primers by starting at min and working up. My powders of choice are IMR4895 and CFE223 (both seem to cover all the bullet weights my rifle likes). thoughts?

in my ignorance I failed to realize that winchester spp, as recommended on the hodgden site, were indeed magnum
That got me to thinking, if you're reloading for a bolt gun or Contender type break open, you don't really need to use primers designed to prevent slam-fires in AR-type actions. But should you anyway just in case cousin Billy or aunt Jeanne or some well-meaning shooter at a neighborhood gathering uses your reloads in their AR? I guess you can either label you ammo or tell people to keep their mitts off your stuff :cuss:but that's neither one of them real effective in my experience. Range is different but when we all get together busting coke bottles and such, people tend to swap ammo a lot.

So, here's the Q- should every .223 reload be treated like it's going into an AR?

Absolutely not. My 80 grain bolt load would never fit their mags, and I definitely would loose my mind if someone touched my ammo. The idea that you worry about someone taking or using your ammo is strange.

We have neighborhood plinking sessions at each others places every now and again. Mostly in the fallow pastures after the last hay cut or before the first graze. Nothing strange about it, this is a farming community. We share ammo, guns, targets... Just don't try and grab the last chicken leg off the grill! ;)

A magnum primer in a .223 round is not going to raise pressures much if at all. I think the word "magnum" scares many. Most are only slightly hotter than standard primers. (except maybe for Remington primers)

I use almost nothing buy a magnum class primer in my .223 ammo. When I'm short on magnum primers I will use a standard SRP (CCI-400) for ammo shot in my Howa 1500 bolt action rifle.

You may just fine you like the magnum primers better than standard ones and they might even improve accuracy.
