I few years back I purchased a 5” 629 Classic. I shoot it fairly well single action but the stock grips are too large for me to shoot double action well. It has the stock rubber grips that cover the backstrap. I can’t get my trigger finger in the proper location for DA.

Anybody have recommendations? It has the round butt grip.

Ill second the Hogues. I prefer the RB to SB versions, but both are good. They give about a perfect grip and are more comfortable to shoot with, with the heavier recoiling guns as well.

I don't know what S&W was thinking when they came up with what they did for their factory rubber grips. Besides covering the backstrap, making the reach wrong, they brought the halves together down the centerline of it, and it feels like a dull knife edge, that concentrates the recoil right into it.

ill check them out. Agreed on the factory

All hands are different, I'd say....the current S&w factory rubber grips on their "L" and "K" frames that irritate so many guys, fit me to a "T". They're fugly as all get out but do the job with heavy loads for me.

But given my druthers, for after market (or even factory issued ones if we got lucky) I'd love to find a pair of good quality cocobolo or figured walnut stocks that mimic the shape of the original Pachmayr Presentations, (especially the curve height right behind the trigger guard).

That distinctive curve is the only one that prevents 2nd knuckle rap for me...and I've tried a heck of a lot of different after market offerings and even tried re-shaping an old pair of S&W smooth targets without success.

Someone here on THR, suggested Blue Mountain years ago but the cost was prohibitive for me....Wish I could figure out a jig for one of my routers, that'd allow me to do the double mortice that makes up the Smith's frame. I could figure out the exterior lines without much trouble but that inside wood to metal frame fit is beyond my ken.

Pic below shows my #2 son's Smith M-66 with a pair of Pachmayr Presentations...that's the shape I mean....that 2nd knuckle curve....and he's totin' it in a Christmas present I made up for him a cpl years ago. Best Regards, Rod.....drop a line in the thread if any of you have stocks that do the Pachmayr shape....Please....

Not intending to be pedantic, but I believe their Signature line is limited to autoloading pistols. If you're trying to find a set of these Pachmayrs for a revolver, the keyword to search for is Presentation.

I get these two product lines reversed all the time and always have to doublecheck.

And I like the Presentation grip shape a lot -- your son's look beautiful!

I once had the same model of 629, with the rounded grip and 5" barrel. The standard Presentations fit my hand just fine, but I'm rather a large person. Pachmayr does make a Compac for the KLN-frames that's quite a bit larger than their J-frame model, but still on the smaller side.

So does the 5” 629 Classic N frame have the same grip as a round butt L frame?

I know the K and L frames use the same grips, Im pretty sure the N frames are different. At least the Hogues have different SKU's for each.

I like the Jerry Miculek grips for those. I like the smooth wood grip and they fit my hand well.

Wayne....I like Miculek's grips as well....have a set on my M-57 Smith and another on a M-66...for me they're just right for DA shooting...and the older I get, the more I enjoy that type of firing. Best Regards, Rod...
