Stumbled across a S&W model 66 no-dash today which looks like it was carried and handled considerably more than it was shot. This one is pinned and recessed with the firing pin on the hammer. The barrel bore looks like brand new. Wearing a Hogue Monogrip right now which would have to go. Nice lockup, no boogered screws, clean frame under the grips, nail polish on the front ramp, all-stainless rear sight, regular trigger and hammer. The finish has a few minor scratches on the left side around the barrel, the right side is in quite good condition, I would say 87% on the finish overall.

Pawn shop, $349. I would like to have this gun but I don't really need it so I'm willing to abuse the shopkeep with an offer a bit. I just know these guys, they will look at me weird wanting a deal on a $349 gun that's only been out for one week.

So, as Howie Mandel always asked, "Deal or no deal?" :)

$450 is the average price around here. I'd say that's a pretty good deal. I'd drop 3 Franklins on the counter and see what happens. good luck :).

For $350 ?

Yeah thats a good deal.

Check it out well, I don't see them for under $450 anymore.

At that price I'd snatch it up whether I needed it or not. K frame 357's haven't been made in a long time.

Also, the shorter the barrel the more it is worth.

Got it!

Good advice skidder, they bit on 3 Benjamins and 1 Jackson!

She's a bit rough looking but I took it straight to my 'smith who confirmed she's a good 'un.

Oh yeah, he put his mega buck bore sight on it after we saw how far drifted the rear sight was, he figures there's no way anyone could have hit the side of a barn the way it was. Who know's, maybe that's why it got sold.

I'll be looking for some new grips for this one, open to suggestions.

My other K-frame .357s have wood target grips but I think most of these originally came with Uncle Mikes synthetic grips. So many choices, but I'm leaning towards Goncalo Alves target, this one is destined for the range only.

Notice the stainless rear sight instead of the common black/blued. Dead giveaway it's one of the first ones made after the model 66 came out, hence no dash after the model number.
Stainless rear sights proved to tough to manufacture.

Actually they went to black because the bare SS is hard to pick up. There were two variations of the rear sight on later models. One was a blackened SS part. They're marked on the underside of the leaf but I can't recall off the top of the head what it is. I have CRAFT. :(

To my knowlege there was no hard cutoff date going from white to black. S&W surely used up all the white ones they had before changing. They weren't known for throwing anything away... ;)

Wow, I can't believe it was still there when you went back. Yikes man, if I had walked through it would have been gone!

Snagged one a year or two ago - I need to refinish the grips and take a decent picture...

As much as I speak of this particular pawnshop in the same way I might joke about my mother-in-law at deer camp, they really are a great bunch, my word is good enough for a 24 hour hold. Mutual respect has been earned. Beautiful gun BTW, much nicer looking than mine.

My 66-1 with the black rear sights. Was a TX PD weapon picked up last year for a song and a little dance. Great balance and accuracy. Congrats on your new acquistion.

Nice find! Apparently I need to scour more pawn shops for good deals.
Pawnshops are great places to look for guns, sometimes they have no idea what the value of a gun is and ask a ridiculously low price. Mostly though, they don't keep the doors open by giving stuff away.

My favorite pawnshop acquisition is a 1950 K38 Masterpiece, they wanted $450 for it, I put $320 cash on the counter and said "that's it, out the door", they accepted. This old girl is one of my most treasured worldly possessions, I can't explain the joy of shooting something older than I am. Accurate as all get out too.
