Hello
I am having a problem with a 649-2 Smith and Wesson. It will not cock back and lock the hammer. It fires fine in DA, but no single action.
The 649 has the shrouded hammer, and at one point someone has taken down either the hammer or the sear.
I have put a couple of pictures up, one with the hammer foward, and one with the hammer being held back.
Can anyone tell me if I need a new sear, hammer, or both. I am not sure what has been ground down to make it DA only.
Any help would be appreciated.

Can't tell for sure with those pics, but it looks like the hammer has had the single action cocking notch completely removed/ground away.

When trying to change a revolver that was DAO I would replace the hammer as that is usually what was modified if done right. If a simple swap does not fix it and run satisfactory, then get a new trigger as well. Don't throw the parts out, I am sure there is someone that wants to do the opposite to their revolver.

Thanks for the replies.
I have never seen the inside of a j frame before I took the side plate off. I thought that it looked like the hammer was ground down also.
I checked today, and I am having a hard time finding a hammer for that model.
I called Smith and Wesson, and got someone who really did not care what I needed. I will try back again tomorrow.
After checking around, I found that I need a 649 -2 hammer that has the firing pin. The only hammers that I could find were the MIM hammers, which I believe fit the - 3 up with no firing pin.
Any info on finding parts would be greatly appreciated.

jonny blaze. Check Brownells at 800-741-0015. They will have just about any S&W part you would need and great tech support.
