When was a Smith and Wesson Model 64-5 produced was it a good a production year?

That is a fine build on average. It would be anywhere from the late 80's to late 90s. Depending upon when, it might have a square butt or round, and wood grips or rubber. But it was before the lock and the hammer changes some people don't care much for. Checking out an individual gun per the "sticky" is more important than what engineering series it is, however. Sorta like a used car - maybe you want a certain year range for the features/look, but you still need to check into the condition to make sure it's not been neglected or abused.

If you look around you can find a pretty good one at a reasonable price. I picked up this police trade-in a couple weeks a go.

Greener I have the same exact gun (grips too). Mine was made in '88 and is a quality piece.

I bought one recently and it was an excellent piece. .006 BC gap .001 end shake. Timing is perfect and the trigger is a smooth 9 pounds 4 ounces. The only defect was a slight cosmetic cant to the barrel. Not enough for the sights to look crooked when shooting but enough that if you looked at the barrel and frame from the top down you could see they didn't line up perfectly.
