In order of smallest to largest, what are the letter designations of Smith & Wesson frame sizes? And what are the Taurus framed size equivalents? I've never seen this info posted anywhere.

I have a Taurus 455, snubbie and don't know what size holster to get for it.

Thanks for the help!

Taurus doesn't have frame size designations that I'm aware of. For smith, from smallest to largest you have J,K,L,N, and X. Most companies that sell holsters will have a list of what Taurus guns will fit in them.

I THINK, the 455 would be equivalent to a K frame smith. I believe it's built on the medium taurus frame, tracker sized. Taurus has basically three frame sizes. The small frames equate to J frames (mostly .38s and .357s with five shot cylinders) and the medium roughly to K frames, though, they're a little stronger. I'm not real sure if the large frame Raging Bull is equivalent. It's a big, heavy gun and chambered for some heavy calibers, .454 Casull being one. I'd think it bigger than N frame for that reason, but don't think it's as HUGE as an X frame.

Anyway, I think your .455 should fit a K frame/L frame holster. As was said, most of the major leather makers will ask the model of gun and will build specifically for the gun you have.

My Taurus Tracker in .45 Colt is probably pretty close to an L-frame S&W.

It only has a 5-shot cylinder.

I've got this K-frame size holster that will fit most any .38 special, you can have it very reasonable if you want it...contact me by email if interested.

Smith & Wesson K frame

I carry a Taurus Stellar Tracker (.45 ACP) every day. I had Sparks make a holster for the Smith Model 66 with 2.5 inch barrel and it fits the Taurus perfectly. While I was waiting for the Sparks holster, I had Mark Craighead with Crossbreed Leather make one for the same gun. It too worked fine and I carried it until the Sparks came.

I did not find a holster maker that had a plug for the Model 455 Taurus so I carefully measured both that gun and my Smith 66 and found the cylinder diameter to be only a .100 or so different. The Taurus is 2 inch but the extra length of the holster is not a problem at all and, if I wish to, I can carry the 66 instead.

By the way, I have run maybe 2000 rounds through this gun and had no function problems. I did, however, take it new in the box to a local gunsmith for an action modification job and got rid of the big fuzzy grips. After 50 rounds my hand hurts from the hard rubber replacement grips but it conceals so much better. I ordered a bunch of stellar clips from Taurus too and they shipped them right out.

Great little gun.

Appreciate all the help and info guys!

Citroen, I agree totally.

I got off early one day this week and took off to the range and tried out the used 455 snubbie.:) Recoil was much milder than I anticipated. I suspect due to the porting. And as far as accuracy, I was very impressed. Fired about 60-70, 200gr. SWC reloads and it ate 'em up like candy.
My Makarov(s) will have to take a back seat, for a while at least, as my carry gun. It's really kind of comforting when you have access to a little hand cannon when you're out and about. :D

The raging bull is quite a bit bigger than a smith N frame. It's chambered for 500 magnum too. In fact, I suspect that smith and wesson brought out the X frame revos because of the Raging Bull being so popular. They never had any interest in a bigger gun than an N frame before that. And people say that Taurus copies Smith and Wesson...;)
