I searched the forum but couldn't find out any info. Will Smith/wesson wood panel round butt grips for a J-frame fit a Taurus small frame? Aside from having to drill a hole for alignment, would the shape be the same?

Should work, many are a very close copy.

There is a problem.
Smith & Wesson J-frame grips can be made to fit, because the configuration of the butts on both guns are simular. But Taurus drills a hole in the frame that I believe is used to locate it in a production fixture of some kind, and most J-frame stocks won't completely cover this hole. If they do you're good to go because all you have too do is relocate a pin hole at the bottom of the stocks.
