Bought several S&W model 4006 pistols...LEO trade-ins because they represented excellent value for the money. Two of the three shoot very well. The third one not so well. All seemed to show relatively low round counts. My second trip to the range with the under-performing pistol told the tale. The barrel was fractured at the muzzle end. There was absolutely no other damage to the pistol. Nor does the pistol appear to be abused in any way. Looking at the crown of the barrel the crack appears to have originated at about the 8:30 position next to one of the lands. Looking at the outside of the barrel the fracture went back about 1/4" diagonally down through the groove. I actually had gas escaping through the side of the barrel! Guess I'm lucky the barrel didn't fragment completely sending scrapnel flying. Anyone ever seen or heard of a barrel fracture this way? My guess is improper heat treating at the factory, but that's just a guess. Overloads usually blow at the chamber end or mid-barrel with resulting damage to considerably more than just the barrel itself. The only damage to my pistol was the barrel.

BTW...Smith & Wesson did an outstanding job of taking care of me on this! Paid shipping both ways and replaced the barrel free of charge in three weeks flat. They sure didn't have to do that. (Their lifetime warranty clearly states that it applies only to the original purchaser...which isn't me!) I didn't BS them...Told them exactly how I came by the pistol and that I was willing to pay for the repairs. I'm really impressed.

Just an FYI...ther dealers on Gun Broker that advertise three day non-firing inspection really mean it. I don't think the guy that sold me this pistol had any way to know that it was defective...but he wouldn't lift a finger to help me after the fact either. As the man said: " You pays your money and you takes your chances." I'm just glad that I didn't end up with a "parts" gun!

WOW! Merry Christmas!
I have to get a new decocking assembly for my 4006. I doubt they"ll send it free of charge. Same deal, LEO traded gun.

Very cool on S&W's part.
I had a totally different issue, but similar results.
They sent a part free of charge.

A couple years ago I bought a used 1990 mfg 4006 that had an unreliable extractor. S&W replaced the extractor at no charge and it's flawless now. +1 kudos for S&W customer service.
