Smith & Wesson 642 J-frame holster?

I had a holster for my 340PD before I sold it. I liked it. I sold it after I sold the gun. I think it was a Galco PH158.

Can anyone confirm if this is the right model for a Galco front pocket holster that will fit a 642? I liked it and figured I'd get another one now that I have a 642.

It's silly to be rebuying stuff, but oh well. Can't be regretting every little mistake.

ETA: The reason I ask is that the Galco holster selector doesn't list the 642 as an option. It lists the 340PD and the 442 though, both I BELIEVE are the same size as the 642, but I could be wrong.

or actually, while on the subject, any other pocket holsters I might want to consider instead of the Galco front pocket holster that I used to have? Maybe something along similar lines?

check out Robert Mika's holsters.

A lot of people here are enthusiastic about them. I've bought two of each pocket type for both the 340 and 640. A definite good-value purchase.

I looked at the Mika offering. Maybe I'll try it another time.

For the moment I ordered the Galco PH158. Looks like it's the only Smith J-frame pocket holster model, so it must be the right model. I know it worked before, so I'll start with what I know works and try new things afterwards.

I bought a Galco PRO15B for my 442. The 642 wasn't listed on the package. Heck, if you look at Galco's online Catalog, you cannot find the J FRM 642. Anyway, I think this is the one your talking (and I have):

Close, but not exactly. I've seen the pocket protector as well, but when I had the 340PD, I found the PH158 (Front Pocket Horsehide Holster) to have a slight edge.

It's made of steerhide and if I'm not mistaken has wire in certain parts to keep it open for reholstering. It's somewhat flexible if I'm not mistaken. I have an IWB holster by Galco for my Glock 27 that is very similar. It's a very good holster and at $24.95, I almost bought it for the 340PD. A really good buy.

This is the Front Pocket Horsehide Holster (model PH158 for apparently all J-frame Smiths)

Interestingly enough, the J-Frame version is a slightly different shape, but the general idea can still be seen. As the name implies it's made of horsehide which is pretty stiff, so no wires are needed. It's heavier than the pocket protector and the horsehide is thick. On the outside, like the pocket protector, it's rough for retention in the pocket and the material difference seems to provide a little more friction than the pocket protector's steerhide. I'm not sure if they treat it or something to do that, or if it's just a natural difference in material. The material thickness is also a little better at concealing the shape of the gun than the pocket protector.

All in all it's very very similar to the pocket protector, just really a different and thicker material that doesn't need any internal wire.

Downside is that it's slightly more than twice the price.

Also, it's weird they don't list the 642 on their site. I ran into that last night which is why I was posting here. I wonder why they do that.

Except for the 2 1/8" barreled 640-1 in .357 Magnum (not the one being discussed anyway), all the J-frame snubnoses are the same external dimensions, only differing in metals and finishes.

right. And apparently Galco designed the smith J-frame holster to fit it too. I was surprised to see that. The same model seems to fit all of them.

I have a Custom Made Leather pocket Holster For My Ruger SP101 9mm but find for Light Weight The Uncle Mikes IWB with the clip cut off works better than anything I've ever tried, It's tacky on the outside & slick on the inside plus sweat doesn't hurt it & it fits the revolver better than any I've tried Yet..
One of these days I'm Gonna Get a Kramer pocket Holster, I've seen the Galco pocket holster & it's footprint is too big for use with jeans but would work well with loose fitting dockers.. I gotta Get Myself one of those too..

If you want a nice little IWB with minimum bulk to go along with your pocket holster, try a Desantis Invisible agent...works for a variety of guns and it also comes in a tuckable clip model..

I have three holsters for my 642 J-frame.

1) Mikas pocket holster. Nice holster for the price. It is comfortable, fits well, and does it's job perfectly.

2) Bianchi accumold, belt holster. This is a comfortable holster and it fits the J-frame well. The only problem (and it's a big one), is that when you try to draw from it, the gun kind of stick in it when you try to draw. There's not enough support on the loops to keep it in place when you try to draw.

3) Don Hume open top, IWB holster (H715). This is a pretty good holster for the price. I'm not a big fan of IWB holsters with a single metal clip, but this one is OK. It holds the gun good and tight and the gun fits secure. However, with the single clip it will move around a little on your belt. Some people like this, some people don't.

I have ordered a K&D defender holster for the 642 and I'm still waiting for delivery.

I also have more than one holster for my J frame. I have a Mika pocket holster as well as a Mika IWB holster. I also have a Fobus paddle holster. (Model # J357) I like pocket carry the best.
