S&W Starts Shipping the 460XVR Today

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., July 12, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (SWB, Trade), parent company of Smith & Wesson Corp., the legendary, 153-year old, global provider of products and services for safety, security, protection and sport announced that it has begun initial shipments of its Model 460XVR (X-treme Velocity Revolver). The revolver, introduced by the company at SHOT Show 2005 in January, received the "2005 Handgun of the Year" award from the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence...

...Manufactured entirely in the United States at the company's Springfield, Massachusetts factory, the 460XVR is capable of launching a 200-grain bullet at a speed of more than 2,300 feet per second and thus represents the highest velocity production revolver currently available. The company indicated that its objective in designing the 460XVR was to design a revolver capable of accurately and effectively reaching targets at distances of over 200 yards. This high velocity performance allows shooters to zero in on targets at long range while retaining a center hold...

Anyone got one ordered yet? Me? I bought a Taurus Raging Bull 480 last year and right now cannot justify buying another handgun for hunting. :(

Interesting. For whatever reason this gun and round don't give me the warm fuzzies like the Model 500 did.

I mean, I'm not buying either gun. (Mid-range .44 Mag is about my limit.) The advent of the .500 S&W Mag. was nevertheless a memorable event. It claimed a whole new chunk of ballistic territory for the DA revolver. It was a fifty caliber mass production handgun from a major American maker; just typing that makes me grin. It was a fine middle finger to the anti-gunners and a symbolic repudiation of the company's terrible mistakes in the Clinton years.

This new .460 XVR thing is built to be super fast with light .45 caliber bullets; that's cool, I guess. But the .500 Mag has charisma.

Oh well, hope S&W sells a boatload of .460s and that their owners are fully satisfied. It's all good.

Just had a thought, has the antis asked for this gun to be banned yet like the did the .500? With the "high-velocity" and "longest range" descriptions one would think Brady would be calling for another ban. :barf:

If thwe anti's were to get (God forbid) a nationwide .50 cal ban, I hope somth make another revolver called the .499XR or something to this effect. :D

At any rate, this revolver looks preety intense, and probably has awesome ballistics to boot. We'll see how the gun holds up to the beating, though.

If I were going to get an x frame it would be the .460. I like it much more than there .50. reason 1. its a "natural" triad revo it will also chamber .454 casuall and .45 long colt. they are basically the same bullet but beefed up and legnthed. so they will be more likely to be accurate and reliable with any of the 3 rounds you fire in it. This is something that concerns me with these "made up" triad revo's from taurus that shoot literally one or more diffenent calibers out of the same gun. such as .38 (fine) .357 (fine) 9mm (what?) and or .38 super( what?) quad revo's or fake triads :barf: reason 2, I also like the fact it is the highest velocity revo round . I dont like the lock but lets not go there.

They're just a little late: that's all. The leftist extremists never miss an opportunity to ignore the criminals and screech and shrill about the law-abiding.

my dealer has been looking for one for me since i first heard of it. if i have no other use for it, it will be fun and a heck of a show off gun. may let ppl shoot it if they agree to paying for the rounds by the one. price of box divided by 20 or 50, ha. wonder if can do reloads with .45C dies as in .454s. i think prolly, maybe so, hope so.

i will still use my SnW 657 for hunting. it will stay inside 3" at 50 yards and recoil is so light it does not cause me to fudge on the trigger pull. .41 mag is plenty for whitetails at 50 yards and under, my self imposed maximum range with any handgun. exception is my scoped TCs and varmints, not deer

That sounds like a plan, H.O.S.

I flinch bad enough with .44 Mag. I can't imagine hunting with a cannon like the XVR. Yeah, yeah, I know, Smith & Wesson and Dick Metcalf say the recoil is "surprisingly manageable." Look, this is an amped-up .454 Casull round we're talking about here. Though admittedly with lighter-than-average bullets in the intended core applications.

But I'm just reporting my reaction. Lots of people are way better and more comfortable big-bore magnum shooters than I'll ever be. If you want a .460, get it, is my view, and all hail the free market.

Wouldn't it be nice....

It sure would be nice, at this juncture, if the arbitrary ATF ban on attachable buttstocks for handguns would be lifted.

Seems like the .460 XVR, .500, 454 Casull, and etc, etc, equipped with the option of attaching a stock could really benefit the hunters and other owners of these super-high power handguns!

What do Y'all think?

Ron

Personally can't understand the need for anything more powerful than a .44 mag, I'm just not into pain. But if you folks enjoy such large artillery enjoy!

I do have a technical question though, remember the .357 maximum? It didn't last long because it destroyed the barrels (forcing cones) of revolvers for which it was chambered. Do you think that Smith has solved the problems of hyper-velocity in revolvers?

I have read stuff on this one your looking at chageing that barrel after about 1200 to 1400 shots not so on the 500 s&w!!!!  It will cost you 100 dollars us so they say at smith!!! :banghead:

I just stopped in at my local dealer today and guess what's sittin' in the case for $900 plus dollars. The 460. He said "got a new wheelgun in for ya".
I told him, when they make it with a snub barrel, to give me a call.

By the way, the darn ammo is waaaayyyy cheaper than the 500magnum stuff.
About 1/2 the price of the 500 stuff. What's up with that ?

The cartridge is basically a really, really long .45 Colt. The fact that you can use common .45 bullets in it (rather than the new, specially molded bullets that the .500 required), and maybe can even use .45 loading dies, probably helps keep the cost down. I'm just speculating.

Actually, now that I think about it, some of the new factory .460 ammo I recall seeing in the gunzine reviews was rather exotic -- not typical .45 Colt bullets. I remember some real mean-looking polymer-tipped spire point rounds. They looked a lot like big game rifle ammo.

I've been waiting on this thing for almost 8 mos now. Went into my dealer to pickup a mod 14 that filled in a spot on my list. Guess what. There it was. It felt really good in my hand. Out of the corner of my eye I see a Ruger box. In side is a 3 screw .44 BH. Darn!! "Oh I got in some other pieces" he said. Shows me a couple of old Smiths, then there it was. A 29-2, 6 1/2", target hammer and trigger, grips, P&R. Hardly used. I called him a bad word and asked him how he could sleep at nite. Said something about how well he could especially with the new bed set I helped him buy. Needless to say the 460 has to wait a few more months, but hey I got the 29. "Do you feel lucky.....punk" Good shootin
kid
