Back before World War Two, S&W installed front sights with various inserts and beads made by the King Gunsight Company in California, on certain target models and the original .357 Magnum. They should not to be confused with the present day King Gunsight Co.

Following the war red insert front blades/white outlined rear sights were introduced as a option on the Combat Masterpiece (pre-model 15) and 357 Magnum (pre-model 27) and standard on the .44 Magnum (pre-model 29) during the early 1950's.
