Magnas. Look better (though beauty's in the eyes of the beholder), take up less bulk... though the last ones on the list aren't too bad (personally don't like oversized revolver grips).
I am really puzzled by the late popularity of the magnas. That was the first thing that people used to change out on their S&W revolvers in the 1970s and 1980s.
There was no gun store without a box of stock grips, ranging from $2 to $5.
The first S&W revolver I ever got to touch was a "combat magnum" It had target grips andI fell in love with it.
Since that day I have obtained many S&W in all configurations.. The old classics wear the magna grips, but for strictly sentimental reasons my favorite is the Target grip on a K frame.
The last photo shows factory checkered target grips. They are probably the one I would vote for, with Magna/Tyler and Smooth Presentation coming in for a close second.
i voted for the target grips. second would be the combats.
i find the magnas to be uncomfortable to shoot, so i guess i'm in the crowd that would take them off as soon as i got the gun. however, unlike some i would keep the original grips! why does it seem that so few used S&Ws have their original factory grips on? are the previous owners keeping them for other guns? looking to sell them separately for an extra few bucks?
I have Guy Hogue Coco Bolo wood on
S & W 617/6 inch Bbl. No checkering w/white separator & End cap
S & W 686P/4 inch Bbl. One-finger groove* checkered w/white separator and end cap.
* I have long hands 6'4" and can palm a Basketball
FWIW
My N frame has the GH in Rosewood with the two-finger grooves,
checkered and no end cap
nothing compares with a nice set of combat grips. Plus they are very helpful in ensuring that you grip the gun in the same manner ever time thus increasing accuracy
