Snake hunt, anyone?

When you walked up on that one you would be glad to have plenty of gun. More than my trusty pocket pistol.

BIIIIG reptile

As the snopes.com article says, "these things always shrink when a tape measure shows up," a phenomonon not limited to large snakes.

Apparently the penchant for tall tales is not limited to those crude, uncivilised Americans.

I will be happy to acknowledge, however, that the snake currently in question is one huge honkin' reptile!

There are large snakes in existance...

however, there is something like a $100,000 reward for one over 30 feet that has never been claimed.. the one 'maybe" was killed by a researcher on a hunting trip in venezula, this big green anaconda struck at him and ripped the shirt offf his chest, they killed it but it was too big to get into the boat. That's one story I beleive as the "witness" was a wildlife biologist who studies anaconda and knew what he saw.

As far as snakes eating people.. buddy if they crush your ribcage, which a big snake can do.. he can eat whatever he wants.

Anacondas eat 6-8 foot caiman regularly, and pythons have been known to kill and eat caged animals sso large that the python can't fit back through the bars of the cage.

Too bad this is a myth, still that's an impressive snake.

Dr. Rob: You may slap my hand for being OT if you wish, but please, sir, what or where or how is Burketsville??

Nope - I don't buy it at all. That snake is not 49 feet long. It would be a good bit thicker than that, too. However, no snake has ever been found anywhere near that size.

Da Cruuuusher...nope!

Dr. RobÑConstrictors don't kill by "crushing your ribcage," they kill by holding onto their prey's ribcage (constricting) so that it can't breathe in. After a while of this, they prey dies for lack of oxygen, and the snake can eat it in peace, rather than trying to eat a struggling victim. Quite effective, really, and it saves the snake the danger of getting hurt while trying to eat, but none of the bones of the victim will be broken.

Their bodies are very muscular, so as to form coils quickly, and hold them against outward pressure, but NOT to tighten the coil so as to squash what's inside. That would be an inefficient waste of energy.

This crushing of the ribcage is a common misconception about constrictors. It just doesn't happen. The snake wraps 2-3 turns around the victim's chest, and every time the victim breathes out, tightens the coils so the victim can breathe in that much less. Happens this way with all of the constrictors. Doubtful if any of themÑeven the big snake in question in this threadÑcould get its jaws around a human, although the largest ones could certainly kill a human by constriction.

Actually I beg to differ the Anaconda kills by rupturing your pulmonary arteries, you literally drown in blood--hell of a way to go. Of course since the anaconda is quasi-aquatic you might drown before you bleed.. anyway you cut it dead is dead. Anacondas DO kill people, esp. children swimming near the water's edge.

Before you say.. 'never documented' I was watching a Geograpic special on primitive tribes of the amazon.. while filming one of the kids wading just dissapears and the kid's mother is screaming anaconda anaconda! They never caught the snake on film, but that boy's mother sure saw it.

Big contrictors have more muscle than they need to do the job and sometimes they break bones.. I've heard the sound coming from a caged Reticulated Python it's an eerie muffled crack. This was a recently thawed bunnyrabbit.. as feeding live rabbits might cause the snake injury and a 16 foot reticulated python doesn't come cheap. Unless I was hearing something else....?? The rabbit was totally thawed.. no ice and warm to the touch.

Perhaps the snake was establishing a relationship by breaking the ice?

:what: :neener: :p :D
