I am considering buying one of these for my wife. She prefers revolvers to autos, and would like something less than 38 special. Which of these three would be most pleasant to shoot? I would think 22mag would have the least recoil, but would it have much muzzle blast and be real loud?

Is the 327 here to stay?

Which would be the most effective man stopper?

Which is best for recoil sensitive shooters?

You could always get a .327, and if she does not like the recoil load H&R in it. CDNN had some great deals on .327's a couple of weeks ago.

I'd go with the .22 mag. it will have very little recoil, and be much cheaper to practice with. There are new .22 mag loads on the market now geared for self defense pistols, which would make the little round perform better.

The answer for my wife (arthritis) was an S&W Model 431 in .32 H&R mag. A joy to shoot and load for. She loves it. Unfortunately, I love it too, so I should get a 638 to stop carrying her revolver so much.

I would guess the .22 mag would have the least felt recoil, but excessive blast and noise. The .32 mag probably has the least subjective recoil out of a snubby (noise and blast accentuate recoil for some people). The .327 would be the most versatile, but not at its best out of a short barrel.

I really like the .32 H&R Mags. Recoil is very limited, ballistics are sufficient and accuracy is often superb. I haven't tried the federal yet because it's almost impossible to get ahold of here. But looking at the ballistics, the federal is likely to have considerably more recoil than the H&R. I would not feel undergunned with a .32 H&R snub.

IMHO the .327 Fed is a modernized .32-20, and would be best used as a small and medium varmint zapper out of a levergun. It has the juice that's largely wasted in a small revolver, and produces considerable blast and flash as a result.

Take your time looking at these because there is a lot of useful info in the links.

Taurus 327,731, Ruger SP-101, and the S&W are all good picks, but there is more to this and all of that is in the links.

I own both the Taurus 327 and the Ruger SP-101 in .327 Federal magnum. The beauty of these is that they compliment eahc other and the other milder 32s can be fired in them. .32 H&R magnum and .32 S&W Long that is.

In the links are where to get ammo as well. www.ammoseek.com ,www.ammoengine.com, www.georgia-arms.com , and others are among the choices where to find ammo.

The 32 calibers are very versatile. They also make an excellent teaching, fun gun, self defense, and good field guns.

For teaching a new shooter or one that is recoil sensitive the .32 S&W Long or .32 H&R magnum are good picks.

The .327 Federal magnum snub revolvers are mostly 6 shot verions. It's true for the Ruger and Taurus. The Ruger GP-100 comes as a 7 shot revolver.

There are speedloaders and speedstrips made to carry extra ammo for the .327 Federal and .32 H&R magnum revolvers.

The .32 H&R is a pussycat out of snub as far as recoil and noise are concerned.

This is her pick as to what caliber/gun combo will work for her. All of that is in the links as well.

I got my wife a 632 last year and it's perfect with .32 h and r loads--a viable defense round, accurate, no recoil. .32's rule.

My wifes first carry gun was a Taurus snub nose ported .32 H&R Mag. She still shoots it, she has aquired a Ruger LCR in .38 sp and is in the role of compareing them. Jury is still out, both are great carry guns for the wife. The LCR may have the edge as reloading is be somewhat cheaper. Off the shelve ammo its a .38sp advantage. I would make a ankle carry out of the .32 if they would come out with a 4-6" DA in a .32-.327 6" for target shooting.

I'd go with .38 Spl and shoot 148 grain wadcutters in it.
It won't kick as hard as a .327 Mag, and will be way easier on the ears then a .22 Magnum.

A Snub .22 Mag will be viscously loud indoors without hearing protection.
As will a .327 Federal.

It also makes bigger holes to let blood out and air in.

I carry a .32 H&R Magnum. I buy my carry ammo from Georgia Arms. It is a 100 grain XTP at 1080 fps at 12 feet from the muzzle out of a Taurus 731 UL 2" stubby. That is 259 ft. lbs. energy. Not that ft. lbs energy really matters from a pistol. At least IMO it isn't a major factor.

I know for a fact that the XTP from this stub nose revolver opens in flesh at this velocity, and it will break bone @ 15 yards, and travel at least 9" after breaking bone. Whatever I shot with it did not get up, and weighed 120 lbs. Not a bad little carry gun, and conceals great in the pocket of any jean or dress pant.

I don't feel like I made a bad choice. I also carry a .44 SPC Rossi M720, but I don't feel lonely when I have my .32 H&R Magnum with me. It and two speed loaders are with me all the time. That is 18 rounds of at 259 ft. lbs. energy. And the revolver is deadly accurate. Trigger pull is a little tough in double action, but it will go into single action as well. Recoil is stiff for a 17 oz. revolver. It is a Magnum after all. Trust me. It is a Magnum. You can tell the difference in a .32 S&W and the .32 H&R Mag. A big difference. My revolver isn't ported.

If you want to see the 100 grain XTP that expanded @ 15 yards and broke bone. I have a picture of it. Let me know.
