SO, another silly question... this one about the Kel Tec PLR-16

I was in the local shop today and it just so happens that my friend, the owner, got in 3 of the PLR 16's... I have given them a look a few times in the past but never gave much serious thought to them as I just could not convince myself of its practical use... well, my mind may have been changed today as I handled one with a handguard installed and got to looking at some other accessories available for it...

From what I have read and heard from a few folks, these are impressively accurate for what they are... a 9 1/4 (?) inch .223 with no shoulder stock. However, the question still remains... What, outside of range play, would I do with this? To me, at least, it fills the same niche as would an AR or AK pistol and does so better. I suppose it could be used for hunting as effectively as pretty much any handgun... would serve well as a SHTF gun I suppose... though I would not consider it much for HD without the a shoulder stock or the ability to practically use the sights without the use of a sling...though I suppose if someone trained for/with such a thing it could thrive as a CQ defensive weapon.... Honestly, when it comes to HD, it seems to be on par with a PGO shottie and we know where that convo leads...

SO, what other uses does this little bugger have outside of zombie killing?

Perhaps concealed carry in a shoulder rig with 5 extra mags along the small of your back... That aught to do it!!!!

It's basically the most compact, lightweight .223 caliber semi-auto on the market.

It's rather inexpensive (at least it was when I purchased mine). Uses standard AR magazines. It's both lightweight and light-recoiling enough that firing the weapon one-handed is very easily done, and still quite accurate.

The OEM sling can actually be easily rigged to position the weapon under your arm like a shoulder holster.

All that adds up to.... a real oddball.

I have two. (I also have a AR and AK pistol)




They are quite impressive.
No matter what I was armed with I would hate to go up against a skilled shooter armed with this thing.


It is very accurate, reliable, powerful and high capacity and can be equipped with the full range of scopes, Red Dot sights and laser/lights.
IMO it would make a fine HD or car gun, EXCEPT for one thing. It has a ear shattering muzzle blast.


I don't even want to think of shooting one of these in a car or home without ear protection..

I never thought I would give this little bugger any thought at all, but I suppose it was inevitably going to happen... cause of course I need one to go with my two AR's..... GAH... and the accessories!!!!....

I suppose i will have to sleep on it for a while... while I build up the funds... sheesh, why did I buy that first gun (p22) when I was 21? From a lowly 22 plinker to an unstoppable snowball!... I suppose if I ever have kids, they will be happy about their inheritance.

How much of a difference did the flash suppressor make in your opinion M2?

I've had one for a couple of years now, great gun, very accurate and reliable with all kinds of different ammo. I have a LeVang Linear Compensator on mine, it helps a lot with the muzzle flash and blast, directs it downrange, away from the shooter.

I was taking the video while my friend was shooting the gun with and without the Phantom flash suppressor.
As my friend said, "I see it but I don't believe it".

I was amazed as I viewed a number of video stills of the gun with and without the Phantom.


This is actually the same gun in the earlier picture, firing after screwing on the Phantom.



Later several shooters, including myself, think the noise is reduced just the very slightest amount. Not really enough to make any difference.

I have one and have had no problems with it. I use Tula steel cased ammo. The only thing I can say is that it is really just a range toy. I really wish I would have bought something else. It has no purpose. It's also VERY LOUD. I mean so loud that you almost need double hearing protection. I have the KT brake on mine.

I suppose it certainly would be a good candidate for a suppressor one of these days if I ever decide to go down that road....

Well I'm sold, at < $500 it is the cheap enough that I am not going to lose sleep if it turns out to be garbage.

1998 South African 55 gr FMJ = 2538 fps

WWB 55 gr FMJ = 2514 fps

(new) Wolf 62 gr FMJ = 2387 fps
(Kel Tec guns don't like Wolf ammo. It jams a lot and is inaccurate.)

Black Hills 55 gr JSP = 2514 fps

Interesting that the WWB and Black Hlls was exactly the same.
