Trying to decide on a scope for my S.308-ver.21, every time I go to pull the trigger I get major second thoughts.
Just looking for some input. The above scopes are what I'm debating.
Primarily shooting 100-500 yards, but would like to be able to go out 600+ yards.
Now, I know this isn't a precision sub-MOA bolt gun, its at best a 2-MOA semi-automatic, but it'll do just fine for Minute of Man/Deer.

Probably mount whatever I choose on either a 'BP-02 low profile, centered, side mount', or 'Texas Weapons Systems Dog Leg scope rail' with 'Burris Xtreme Tactical low (1/4") rings'.

So far I've only had my tired'ol mark1 eyeballs over iron sights, and I'm not the greatest shot.
I do much better being able to see the dagblasted target and not just a blur over the front post.
I can consistently ring a steel human silhouette at 200 yards, but don't know where I was hitting it exactly (no spotter).

I think it'll do quite well with glass on it... Minute of Man, minute of pie plate or to take a deer or two this fall.

I voted for the Burris Fullfield II. However, I think the Vortex Diamondback would be an equally good option. There are some negatives to how you have to usually mount a scope with a 50mm objective. On the other hand it should gather more light. That's why the Burris got my vote. The Crossfire definately has a great price at SWFA, but they are made in China which I know most people here don't like. I've heard a few complaints about people having issues with them, but I've heard a lot more people that are happy with them than I've heard of having issues.

How are you going to mount the scope on there anyway?

Lots of guys say good things about Vortex, but the fact they have a 50mm objective turns me off. I don't know why they did that. All of the scopes that you mentioned run about neck and neck. I'll just suggest that you check out the Sightron scopes and don't discount the Bushnell Elites and Weavers.

I'd stay away from that Millett DMS-1. I had one and gave it away. Again, lots of guys like it, but I guess it's because it's a tacticool scope that holds zero. Aside from that, it's like looking through a fishbowl.

Do you know what the accuracy capability of the rifle is? I mean, if it's a 2 minute of angle rifle, it's kind of senseless to use a scope that will allow you shoot at things over 1000 yards away. I wouldn't be looking at anything more than a 10X.

Hmmm... Thought I'd answered most of your questions, I'll try again.

They offer alot of scopes in 40mm, including the 3-9x40, 4-12x40 and others.
I'm starting to lean towards a choice between the Vortex 4-12x40 BDC and the Leupold 3-9x40 QDMA RBR.

Chile!,

The 308V21 looks sweet. have you tried any FGMM 168gr?

I'd recommend the low rise UTG quick detach mount from CDNN Investments.

http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ak.html

for $29.99 you get a QD scope mount. I've had the same mount on a 12ga, 308, 30-06, 20ga, 5.45 and 7.62x39.... thousands of rounds through it and it's still kickin. Holds a zero, can remount it and it retains its zero. Very good value.

I'd recomend nothing more than 3-9x40ish. I put a Nikon Prostaff ($120) on mine and it worked just fine. Really the best benefit of a scope is the fine reticle aiming point. The magnification is nice but you'll never need more than 6x.... You can shoot out to 1k with 6x and still see the smoke fly.

I actually have a psop 6x on my .308v21 now. Haven't taken it out to see how it works yet, but i'll let you know over on the saiga boards if you want to send me a PM over there.

Hope you figure out what you want to do with your scope.

of the choices you have listed i think the nikon is your best bet.

just to muddy the waters some, i think you'd be better served by having a look at a fixed-6 power scope, and would further suggest you not rule sightron out. also, if you want a variable i would say you should be including the redfield revolution in your list.

if it were me and i was looking to stay under $200, i would be looking closest at nikon, sightron, redfield, and bushnell - in no particular order. look thru each of those scopes, and pick with confidence that it will do what you want.

I think you made a good decision. You do not need a high power scope to do what you want. Two to Seven is a nice range for up close work to medium range shooting. It's not a target gun after all. Minute of bad guy or animal is all you need at the 500 yards you mentioned as the furthest you expect to shoot. How is the sight picture? Folks have good things to say about Vortex.

Nice pics.

I know I made a good and educated decision, I did my homework on scopes, online and in the stores.
I asked a crapload of questions and looked through alot of scopes.

Vortex already had a great reputation with me, I run their StrikeFire on my AR, and it is danged good for not being Aimpoint/EOTECH.
I had to use Vortex's CS once, awesome experience, they are a pleasure to do business with.

The Viper line has good reputation and reviews, very decent glass with good coatings. Ya can't find better in this price range... Period.

This scope being on clearance sale for a mere $169.00, at SWFA didn't hurt either :)
