I just took a new shooter to the range today.

He's been bugging me to go, and this was the first time I've had a chance.

I didn't go how I prefer. He's kind of a macho guy who fancies becoming either a SEAL or IDF, and got bored with .22 REAL fast. just had to shoot the AK and the Sub2000.

Didn't hit much of anything, but he had a lot of fun, so I guess that's what matters. I guess maybe he was just more interested in shooting than learning to shoot.

As a tip, I've noticed my new shooters do better when given a scope. I know it's not proper, but for the first time out, if they're hitting stuff, they'll have more fun. having fun brings them back.

Which is why I didn't worry too much about my friend not really learning. He's hooked, He'll be back. There's time for the nitty-gritty later.

That's the good thing about dating tall german girls.

My ex got bored with the birdshot really fast, and went through all of my slugs, hahaha. She's a good girl.

Good on you, Mr. Trooper, for teaching someone something good.

WOW thanks for all the replies!

Ill be sure to have eyes and ears for us both, and warn her about the low cut shirts.

I DO have a fresh box of clays, and a package of Birchwood Casey shoot-N-see stickers to take along, So that should be fun.

Sadly, the one type of gun i DONT have is a .22 revolver. :( Maybe I can scrape the money together for one before we go. What I do own:
* CZ 75 Semi-compact 9mm, with Hogue wrap around grips
* Walther P-22
* Colt Commando 2" bbl fitted with Packmayr compacs
* S&W Model 19, 6" bbl
* Glock 30
* Springfield Armory G.I.
* Savage MKII (.22lr)
* Mossberg 500E (.410)
* Mossberg 930
* Vector AK-47

Iv been shooting all my life, so i don't have a problem with any of these guns. But as you can see, MOST of them are not new shooter friendly.

Ill take the .22 rifle and pistol. The rifle has a red dot scope thats dialed in, so she shouldn't have much problem busting some clays with that.

i DO have some fairly light, semi-waddcutter target loads on hand for the .38. If I decide to take a revolver, should it be the 2" colt, or the 6" smith? The wooden factory grips on the Smith are uncomfortable, even to my larger hands. The Compacs on the Colt would probably fit her hands better.

Thank you all again for the help. hopefully I will end up owing Cannonball a beer. ;)

I've taught a few women to shoot and have had great success teaching the basics in two or three sessions before going to the range. If a new shooter has some no pressure time to learn safety rules, grip, sight picture, range procedures and ask questions it seems to let them relax and do well at the range. If safe to do so dry firing with snap caps helps too. If you can print out the basic safety rules, a drawing of sight alignment, and some basic info on shooting (stance, grip, sights, etc) to look over at home their confidence increases as well.

Good info here-

Not trying to be a know it all here but most women didn't play with cap guns and water pistols like we did as kids and seem to like more information than guys require.

The P-22 is a great weapon to start someone off with, IMHO. My wife LOVES shooting the P-22 more than any of my other guns, except for the little S&W Terrier. She considers it the simplest to shoot and she appreciates the low recoil.

While some of these are valid concerns (hot brass is a valid concern for most people anyway with the P-22 :)), I wouldn't get too caught up on "trying" to make it a great trip. Just take an autoloader, a wheelgun, and a rifle, and let her play around and get comfortable. Exploring other guns can come later.

+1 on all of the target recommendations.

I broke down and picked up a 4" Taurus M94 today. Iv wanted one for a while, and i figured that this was a good excuse. :D
