So you think you might be getting set up

In terms of cameras, look for a wireless IP camera w motion sensor capability. I got one from Linksys, Panasonic makes one, there are others.

The idea is I have them networked pointed at the door and entry points from the inside. Something trips the motion sensor, it videos from 1 second before the motion to 4 seconds after and emails it to me immediately. It bounces to my cell phone. The idea is, if someone enters my home when I am not home, I know they are there, I know what they look like, and possibly if they are openly carrying a weapon. It is emailed to my and my wifes cells so if she were to be on the way home, she can leave with my kids before even entering the home.

If they are already home, then they need to get into my house, set off my security alarm, deal with the 80 lb canine, and then deal with my firearm in their face. BTW, it will all be videoed by the same cameras I mentioned so there are no questions in court as to what happened.

As much as it pains you, I have seen family members steal from others, trust your gut. I have found they can be more reliable than anything else.

For your guns, get them in a safe while you are gone. The one my home is heavy and has lag bolts through it into the floor joists and wall joists. So if they steal out of it, they earned it through the effort it would take to get it.

Sorry guys for the gaps in my replies. I have been doing some work for my unit and it is 93 miles from me. Makes for a long day.

I like the idea of hiding the weapons in my house. I doubt my wife would give the location away. The attic is not accessible for the cousin (literally wouldn't fit through the hole!). And "loaning" them to another Marine (who did his time) has been discussed. He would love to see my AR in action against a horde of g-hogs in his area. One of those will most likely be used.

I think I am going to play one hell of a mind game on him and offer him the chance to take care of the bike, since he is so confident in his ability and has never laid one down. I'll let him know how much I trust him with it, and see what he says to being responsible for it. With gas on the rise again and his bike down for tires he can't afford, he might treat it well just because I asked him to. He has often said his place is like Ft. Knox so I'll give him a chance to prove it. Since he would store it with his, which is much, much more valuable, who would steal mine when his is there (his own words one day whole riding)? Opinions?

In any case I know it is a bit cowardly not to breach the issue with him directly. I want to believe he wouldn't do anything. I also don't want to be wrong and lose a guy who I consider a friend (we all have those friends we worry about sliding don't we?). It may be just our apprehension with my departure approaching. I wish crap were simple these days!

Go to Lowes and get a couple of 4' long 5" diameter PVC with caps. Scroung some silicon dessicant bags from supply and you have the perfect storage system. You will have to remove the pistol grip and you are good to go.

I applaud your tolerance; you are much more forgiving than I could ever be. I hope you have a safe tour and remember that luck is when opportunity meets good planning.

Send your wife to take a C.C. class. Lock the doors/windows. Have a trusting family member or friend hold onto your guns while you are gone. Get a log chain and a heavy duty lock and lock the bike to something. Good luck.

Well now I didn't read too many of the posts so If these ideas have already been suggested just ignore me .

Since he is a family member who comes by fairly regularly ask him to come over and help you with some kind of project "Make something up if you have to like build a workbench" in the process give him plenty of refreshments such as cans or bottles of soda etc. and when he is finished with one have another right ther to replace it .

When you or the wife take away the empties do so carfully and stick the can/bottle in a nice clean Gallon zip lock baggie to preserve his fingerprints .

As the day goes by have the wife take some snapshots of you and him as the project progresses and if he asks why you're doing it tell him it is for memories of the family and because of your upcoming deployment to the war the wife wants memories should "God forbid" anything happens to you .

Just B4 he leaves for the evening call the local police and when they show up ask him to sit down and have a talk with you the wife and the officer that responded , and explain to the officer his unusuall behavior and give him /her some of the evidence as well as photos of him .

Then inform him front of the officer he is no longer welcome at your home and will be considered a trespasser and will have the police called and charges pressed if he ever shows up again and to now get off of your property and never come back !

By the way the last paragraph is the procedure that Police officers had us use at work to bann people from the business if we had a trouble maker on our hands and it usually works very well .

Remember to get the officers name and badge number and keep it in a safe place and perhaps ask them if they would make you a short written statement as to what you had them witness at your home with the names of all parties listed .

By George, I think you've got it! This approach gives you the best of both worlds and neatly avoids a potentially nasty family situation. There is no way your bike is going to disappear if his doesn't do so also. Securing and hiding the artillery is an excellent idea if the location is both relatively secure and secret. (The assumption is that your wife can keep her mouth shut and the kids don't know even that the items are hidden, let alone where.)

Thank you for your service and stay safe.

A story about kids and hiding guns....

During our last move (in 1989), I stuck some odds & ends into the lockbox that contained all of my guns (except a carry gun and a junk .22 rifle). No problem getting it into the new house, etc.

One night, after the mud monster went to bed - she was not quite four yet - I had to get something out of the box, and put it on the floor in front of my desk. Guess who walked in about the time I got the lock off and the cover open....

Naturally, she had to look at everything. She couldn't lift some of them! Then she found a junk .22 pistol (sort of a starter pistol that would actually fire a projectile) and I made the mistake of saying something like "now, that's more your size." Naturally, she wanted it. I was tempted to snap off the firing pin (part of the hammer), but figured that the neighbors might recognize the thing....

(I'm still trying to figure out how she got into the attic a few years later....)

The kids know....

(However, the "give him the bike" solution may be a very good one, and there are ways to hide guns in a house.)

Regards,

What about storing the stuff somewhere 'safe' and then if he asks, tell him you had to sell the stuff to meet some obligation.

Drain the gas from the bike, turn the gas off, remove spark-plug wires, drain brake fluid, I could name more, but you get the idea. OR take the rear tire off and give it to a friend with a garage. Gun safe is a GREAT idea, getting one next month and can't wait. Good luck, and be safe over there. God bless you for fighting for us.

Regards,
This is why I try to be transparent with my kids. I'm not saying you did anything wrong; kids have this way of finding out the funniest things. Mine have nothing to find so they don't try. If I hid them they would try to find them. Since they have a gun or two in their own rooms they don't think anything of them (I keep the ammo). They treat them like their bows. Something to be respected, but not feared or overly envied. They are made to clean them every use. The younger daughter is to the point she helps me with brass prep and the oldest girl seats bullets for me (they shoot them they can help load them!). Just a different approach.
