Was she setting me up?

She asked if she could come in and use my phone.......to which I replied "No".
She then stated that her husband was coming to kill her and she needed to use my phone. I responded with "where is your husband right now?" She gave me some location that is about forty miles from my home. She again stated that she wanted to come in to use my phone to call the police.

This is goofy. If her story was legitimate why did she end up at your place? But even as a cover for criminal activity it's goofy. An expected reaction to her saying 'someone is trying to kill her' would be for you to immediately call the cops, not something a criminal would want. Of course it could have been an immediate off the cuff response to your finding her too.

I had one time, back before cellphones were common, when my car broke down out in the sticks.

Bearing in mind how sketchy the whole "can I use your phone?" thing sounds, I knocked on a door, and then backed down off the porch and stood in the yard with both hands visible.

When they answered the door, I didn't ask to use the phone, I just said "Excuse me ma'am, my car broke down further down the road. Can you please call my father at 555-5555 and let him know that I broke down about four miles east of Carnation on Rt 453?"

I think that's a far more reasonable way to go about it, and was easier on all parties involved.

It was a scam or she was trying to case you house. Like others have said if she was seriously in danger she would have been more excited, banging on the door, and would want you to call 911, and not her mother. My .02 is if something like that happen to me, I would keep the door locked and her outside, grab the phone and call 911. I like MD Willington's idea too, Take her pic and calling 911 from inside your home with the door locked. If it was a real situation, you will know your own address better than some hysterical victim. If it is a scam and you call 911, the girl would take off. If it is a real situation bringing her into your home could open up a can of worms.

"I would park my car where they cant see it, put the dog outside or whatever you usually do when you go out. Then I'd sit in a dark room for a few hours cuddling my 12ga and waiting."

I think that posting your intent to bait an intruder as you "lie in wait" is a great idea.

You think you'll enjoy prison?

thats kind of funny that she doesnt know how to use a cell phone, Everyone has them.

I agree with the folks previously who said you should have just immediately called 911 yourself. If she's legit she can explane it to the cops.

I also agree that you should write down all the details you can think of about the incident while it's fresh in your mind. Call the cops and let them know that you'd like to report a "suspicious incident" so there's an "official" record.

Stay safe.

I got two cents in my pocket, and I am gonna toss them in here....

I don't see where you did anything wrong. You didn't let her gain entry to your home, thus avoiding a bogus accusation of rape, or an extortion on the threat of claiming you tried to rape her, or let her get a better look at your "cool stuff".

Let's face it....someone claiming someone is "coming to kill me" from 40 miles away is a stretch at best.

My BS detector says you were being set up for a scam.

I'd just be even more alert than you already seem to be...you probably didn't profile out to be a good victim, so she has moved on to easier pickings.

casing your house

A typical scam is two women or a woman and child comes to your door and says their car broke down and can they use your phone. While you're distracted showing one person where the phone is the other person slips into your bedroom and goes through your dressers. If they come to a house and an elderly person or woman answers they'll run the scam. If a man or someone with a dog answers they mumble something about the wrong address and walk away.

I had that happen to me before too, woman thought her boyfriend was going to kill her. I called 911, and told them the story. The cops were there in 5 minutes, and got their ID's and told them to stay out of the neighborhood. I told the crime prevent person, and they e-mailed out an alert to everyone. I guess the woman had some mental problems, but think they were trying to case out my house.
Gee, I miss my German Shepard, his bark would get even the bible thumpers moving on to the next house.....

When I was a kid my younger brother set fire to a huge tree and half the back yard trying to light up somebody's discarded cig butt.

While the FD and half the neighborhood was watching the show, somebody entered the house and went thru all the drawers and cabinets.

Don't remember if anything major was stolen.

Or maybe because of your own paranoia you turned away a lady in distress.

I don't recall a lady in distress being turned away.

It's been a couple days since I read the original post but as I recall it was stated that our lady at the door said that her husband was 40 miles away.
So the distress, if there was any, was not imminent. And he offered her his cell phone in order for her to call the police but she decided to call her mom instead.

However a little paranoia is not a bad thing.

call 911 while she is on your doorstep

She then stated that her husband was coming to kill her and she needed to use my phone.
If you had responded with, "Then I'll call 911 right now," she would have stuck around to talk to the cops, or she would have run away immediately. Either way, you needed to call 911 at that moment.

While you're distracted showing one person where the phone is the other person slips into your bedroom and goes through your dressers.
Funny... "i swear i let two people in... hummmm... must have been a dream..."

Document, document, document

When this happens, document everything ASAP, her description, any marks or mannerisms, day/time. Keep that telephone number. Call and report the instance to the police. Others to may have experienced her antics. If so, the police will not have the collective data.

By the way, good job! Do not ever let someone in.

Definetly sounds like she might be casing you. Get inside see what you got and then find away later to get back in. Nice work I dont let anyone use my phone either, I'll give someone change to use the pay phone but you aint coming in the house, even on threat of death. Figure its this way for me, me or them and I am gonna make damn sure it aint me.

You could check with the local police department and see if the description you give them fits her. Just a precaution I would take.

A little paranoia may save your life. good work.

She was probably the only person in forty miles that didn't have a cell phone, even the kids in day care are carrying them today

We used to see crap like that before Farm attacks back in S. Africa...

Someone would knock on the door of a fenced yard (no idea how they go past the dogs), aske to use the phone or ask for food.
Most Boere on farms won't turn them away if they ask for food. The second you open the steel security door, they bust in. The rest isn't pretty.
The suspect is usually a woman or younger boy...between 13 and 16. Nothing intimidating.

You did the right, thing - but I would have dialled the phone for her as well - asking to call the cops and then calling her mother seems odd. Get a security sliding door over that slider too.

huh?

front door or front porch door?

no one cases from the front by standing in front of the door. They knock to see if there is a dog or owner home. if she were peeping in the windows or testing knobs or windows ...maybe

look to the street....if you've got an unusual car idling or just sitting while occupied you got troubles.

don't know what your yard looks like....blind spots and all for a dude to be waiting in...so keep the door between you and the knucklehead and most importantly........

keep an eye on your visitors hands.

Nobody is coming in, and I'm not physically handing anyone a phone. What I will do is offer to call anyone of the person's choice, relaying the conversation through the door. If they say it's an "emergency," my reply will be, "Oh? Then I'll call 911 for you and get the police over." Then we'll see if the "emergency" is legitimate.

A few weeks ago I got a knock on my door during the early evening. I said (through the door, with a pistol in my hand) "Can I help you?" A female voice replied in Spanish (my apartment complex has quite a few Spanish-only speakers). I don't speak Spanish, so I repeated my request. Whoever it was finally left. Later I wanted to go out, couldn't find my keys, then finally discovered I'd left them sticking in the door.  I guess that was what they wanted to tell me. ;)
