I know it's been done before, but I've marveled at these configurations for years on the discussion forums and figured it was time for me to convert one of my own SOCOM 16s to wood.

After browsing the BTF used stocks on Gunbroker selling for upwards of $90, I got an e-mail from Boyd's. They had brand new walnut M1A stocks for only $106! Ordered the stock liner w/screws, front ferrule, and sling swivels from Fulton Armory. The existing butt-plate was an easy transplant, but the ferrule and liner were necessary because they're molded into the fiberglass stocks. The front swivel screws included with the Fulton kit were too long and interfered with the action. So, the Dremel came out and cut them down to size. Over the weekend, I removed the screws and put in a couple of rivets. Here are some pics.

Looks good. I like the wood.

How do you like the 16 inch barrel? Every time I've shot the SOCOMs, I thought that the blast was a little excessive, but obviously not everyone agrees.

Looks great. I am also a fan. Here's my SOCOM with an M14 stock and ventilated handguard:

OnPoint,

Is that a sling from Springfield? I got one from them that took a whole bottle of Lexol and about three hours of work to make it at all pliable.

For the next level, if you're going to stick with irons instead of an optic on the scout rail, Brownell's sells a Walnut upper handguard....Looks worlds better than the plasticy one on my Loaded.

Didn't know they made a wooden handguard! I will definitely research that. Would be REALLY unique then. I bought the brown fiberglass handguard from Fulton, but couldn't decide on whether or not to remove the scout rail. Honestly, I'm never going to shoot anything but irons on it, but when I looked at the screws I thought I would've ever be able to get it on straight again. Didn't want to remove and reinstall and have it off-cant. Then, I thought about Dremel'ng the heck out of the brown handguard to make it accommodate the scout rail. The sling is standard Springfield Armory fare. It's about as pale as, well never mind that. ;) I may dip it in some crude oil if any ever washes up over here.

Here's the wood hand-guard from Brownell's on my Loaded, and if you look at the former-No4mk2, reborn a 1944 Santa Fe, you'll see what became of my Springfield Armory sling - Feibing's Leather Dye. The sling on the M1A is a much nicer product at $17.99, i think it came from Cabelas.

i thought the wood ones caught fire ? maybe the experimental ones from the 60s

i havea wood stock i put my socom in and it looks good. the problem is i like the reflex optic so i cant get rid of the mount just yet. maybe i'll get another socom to run no scout mount.

i have an 18 incher in a bush rifle config (no scout mount) and with irons its plenty accurate to 100. i think it looks really clean and sedate in a wood stock. of course a camo painted GI looks good too.. now i have a few extra stocks and woudlnt you know it, i was about 10 minutes late on a barreled action only recently for like 1200. dang.

Feibing's Leather Dye! Thanks, I will try that, amigo! Wood hand guards look great on your rifle too!

Sure thing. Watch out, that dye really dyes; wear gloves.

On the wood HG, Yes, if you went cyclical, i'm sure you could start a fire...but in the interest of accuracy and funding, i generally keep the rounds spaced out a bit anyways.

A note on installation. If you look really close, you can see where i dropped the bolt - and took a little chip off the brand new HG.... so i'd check the clearance there (right behind the retaining clip) and shave it down with a razor-blade accordingly. I still need to hit that spot with a little stain to blend it in.

on point that is a sweet looking rifle. i dont mind the black, it might grow on you. i have the ss loaded with black hand guard & wood stock. imo m14/m1a's are the best looking rifles of all time. i never get tired of looking at them.

dafitch, that appears to be a selector switch on your rifle. What gives?

I wish it were functional. It's a dummy switch to fill the void present in the M14 stock.

dafitch... now THAT is a grab and go rifle !
nice.
i need to investigate a regular handguard on my socom and ditching the rail... otherwise mine is set up like the OP

Both are beautiful. Personally I would get a brown handguard but keep the rail as the rail provides options. Springfield sells brown handguard models designed for the rail so it shouldnt' be too hard to get.
