Sold Pistol. New Owner Missing?

I recently received a circuit board in the mail that the owner wanted me to repair for him, along with my standard charge for a different board. It was from the correct machine, just the wrong board.

I emailed, no response, I called, no response, I emailed again...2 weeks later I finally received a response and an apology, he had been out of town on a death in the family.

Don't worry about it, let him contact you.

Here is the latest. The buyer contacted me via email Monday. Very apologetic for not contacting me earlier. Requested to mail pistol to his FFL Dealer for about a 1/3 of the original cost of requested price for my inconvenience. Whoa! Sure, send me a signed copy of FFL along with check and we'll call it even.

Well, that was 5 days ago and no check w/FFL license. Wow....

He clearly has a lot of crap going on.
But at least you know he is legit despite his weirdness since he is having it mailed to an FFL.

Keep trying to bother him. You'll do him a favor by reminding him over and over and you'll get a 33% profit over your selling price for your trouble.

Still a win/win even if inconvenient. Really cool of him to offer that much of a concession. I would probably just offer like $50 for the trouble (though I would never just forget about a firearm purchase in the first place haha).

I would tell him do it tomorrow and keep the 33%......

Next time he's in contact, get his cell number or another way to get a hold of him. ('cause this ain't workin')

So he is willing to pay you 1/3 of the price of the gun to ship it to his FFL?

On top of what he payed for the gun?
You are correct. Actually it it 43% of the original price paid for pistol. This is getting bizzare, but remember I was already paid in full once!

I think the little hairs on my neck would be standing tall if I were you. If and when you do get a copy of the FFL paperwork. Go to the ATF website and enter the FFL # to confirm that it is legitimate. Then if all checks out send the handgun to that FFL. It then becomes the responsibilty of that dealer to do proper paperwork. At least then there is a legal papertrail getting that gun the heck out of your name and into the other parties.

I have bought and sold several firearms on this forum. have always been lucky and dealt with some pretty good folks. Only one time have I agreed to a FTF transaction. I would always prefer to go through a dealer for any transaction. I my mind it puts both parties at ease. The whole hey meet me in X parking lot and bring a thousand cash is just a receipe for trouble.

Very strange situation.

I'm always leary of anyone who offers to pay more than the asking price.

As others have mentioned, there are a lot of scams involving counterfeit cashier's checks and money orders, and it can take a long time for the bank to figure it out. I would think it would have been discovered after nearly three months, but still.....

Before you complete the transaction, I would talk to someone in the know at your bank to make sure that check can't come back on you. In the future, CASH the money order. That way, if it's a fake, it's on the institution that cashed it, not you.

Once upon a time I spent six weeks in an ICU unit with a loved one. Anything but making sure they were cared for did not enter my mind. Have known spouses to stay by a bed side or at a hospital for several months. Guns in your safe; I would guess stand by and something will turn up.

Yeah. Just ask him the name and address of the dealer if he can't get their FFL.

Then YOU can call them, get their FFL #, verify it with ATF, and ship to them.
Then they can make sure he gets it and leave a paper trail in case he is sketchy.

I don't believe in background checks and registration, but I do believe in discretion. So if this dude seems sketchy, sending it to an FFL or not selling at all are the only good options.

Since no funding for shipping or FFL came Saturday I emailed buyer telling them I am going to refund there money. I also stated something is "fishy" about this whole deal, and that I should contact there local law enforcement agency and find out who they really are.

The buyer immediately emailed me back saying I was expecting things to happen to quickly, and to just go ahead and keep the firearm and funds they already sent? No way am I going to keep the money and firearm! Sounds like the buyer is in some sort of legal trouble after 2 1/2 months of excuses. I want no part of this.......

Tuesday I am going to use Certified mail along with a US Postal Money Order and return this guys money. I should of did this long ago. Hopefully no one else has to go through this.

“Curiouser and curiouser”. I would still be leery about that check. Maybe wait ‘till the 180 day mark before sending a refund. I’ve heard of bad checks not showing up for over 6 months.

By the way, the 419 scammers use the word “fund” a lot – specifically “fund” rather than “funds”. Did this person do that?

Why not? You're not doing anything wrong, the purchaser has amended the contract in your favor.

That said, sounds like it truly is a scam. Who wouldn't want their money back when offered a refund? IMO, only someone who never actually was out the money and has since realized they were committing a felony with a fake check and wants to get as far away from it as possible.

Either way, I'd do what flopset said if you're dead set on refunding his money: Wait three more months to be darn sure a bogus money order doesn't come back on you.

This post can get a little confusing. I have already been paid for this firearm. Deposited the Western Union Money Order like April 02, 2011. It's just that the buyer has been so "wishy washy" about contacting me, offering me to keep the money and pistol for my troubles. Don't forget the outrageous amount they wanted to give me for my troubles if I would ship to there FFL Dealer. Even I'm getting confused. :banghead:

Anyone use Fiocchi ammo?

I have liked what I have fired. It always seems a little hotter than the competition, but it always more expensive so I avoid it. I ran into a sale this weekend here in Ohio while visiting my daughter for $10.99 a 50 round box of 124g hollow points. I couldn't pass them up. They are usually twice the price. Anyone else have an good or bad thoughts on this brand of ammo? Thanks.

Dave :)

What a soap opera story! I'm glad it's not me. It's a good thing you're keeping all the documentation on this.

Very interesting, just read the whole thread. Good luck with everything. I'm interested in how this turns out.

I don't know what I would do now. Everyone about it is sketchy.
If you actually received funds, then yeah send them back.
If you got a check or possible fake MO, then wait.

While the idea of a free firearm or large sum of money (several hundred, for me) is tempting, I would be weary that there is always a catch.

Then again I have heard of wealthy people basically throwing their money away like that because they just don't care and would rather lose such a small amount to them than be bothered by correcting everything.

I don't know about that. The wealthy people that I know, got that way by being pretty frugal. I guess that must vary.

If you are set on sending the refund do go to your bank and make darn sure that you will NOT be responsible if that check ends up bad first. Then send a bank check. That way they will not have your mailing info AND your check with account number/address etc. Normally I would not worry but with this transaction there are so many red flags I would seriously worry. The biggest one was the instant communication when HE needed it.:scrutiny: Is he a prohibited person or a minor that can't pass the background check that thought you would go along with something illegal and now has cold feet?? This gets stranger by the day.:confused::scrutiny:
