I would like to appeal to those who frequent this forum to give us Canucks a hand with activism, growing our sport, enforcing (gaining) our rights & the occaissional poll regarding the inherent right of self defence and the tools by which to protect our lives.

To start we have a simple one from the Toronto Sun.

Also, if this is innappropriate, I would like to know and I will refrain in the future.

Thanks folks.

This might be a bit off topic, but what are your (citizens) rights in Canada regarding gun ownership? (just for my personal edification). Thanks.

Canadian gun laws are just as convoluted as American gun laws. Perhaps less so because, they are federal and as such are, "theoretically", the same across Canada. Many provinces choose to enforce these laws to a greater or lesser degree. Ontario and Quebec are the least gun friendly provinces while BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan are the easiest places to own guns. We can own handguns although CCW is a big nono. It is possible to get a permit to open carry in the bush for defence against bears, etc but that is rare and requires reams of paperwork. Self defense in Canada falls under the "knife to a gunfight" rule. That is, you can only defend against force with less force. You can kill your attacker but you sure as Hell better be able to prove in court that he was going to kill you. Many, many firearms in Canada are prohibited. Most for reasons known only to the faceless bereaucrat who signed the order. In Canada we have this nifty little thing called an "Order in Council". This allows the ruling government to pass laws for no reason and with little or no public discussion. So, when the Canadian government said: 'All handguns with a barrel length of less than 106 mm (4 1/4 inches)are prohibited.", that was it. We get to keep the ones we have but if you have never owned one you can't buy one. You can buy a real nice S&W 4" revolver up here for 400.00. We can own guns that you guys can't. Norinco comes to mind. Dlask makes 8.5 inch barreled pump shotguns. 50 BMG is just another rifle round up here. Some people even own and shoot 14.5 antitank rifles. Howitzers, tanks and cannons are fine as long as we don't fire exploding shells in them. 10 rds only in pistol mags. 5 rds only in semi-auto rifle mags. Except M1 Garands, they couldn't figure that one out. Here's some sites that explain everything:

Or confuse the issue more. :D

Whyinhell don't you Westerners seceed from socialist Ontario and join the U.S.

You live, think, and ARE just like us!!!!

As an aside, I remember being in Alaska in the early '60s when the PM of I believe BC, said that if Quebec did leave the Canadian Union that BC WOULD become the next U.S. State......Damned shame he didn't follow up on it.

The way most of you think, we'd ALL benefit from it~!!!

Well folks, I would like to thank you all for your sentiments. I'm late back here, but I am here nonetheless.

dogrunner, we most likely won't join the US, but we would more than likely build ourselves a Constitution quite a bit like the USA's. The West seems to identify more with the US than with Canada east of Sasketchewan!

BDFT, I have found that there is actually a certain sentiment up here that we don't hate Americans. Heck, when ever I meet one at The Shooting Edge (I work there part time) I say "hi" and we shoot the breeze awhile. What you may be thinking about is Central Canada, which is, in my opinion, like a spoiled child. The folks in the Maritimes tend to be cool. :)
