So I've been having a little fun with a chrony, an energy calculator, and various guns I own. Submitted simply for your amusement.

5.56x45 (rifle)...................................3270 fps [1306 ft/lb energy]

9mm Luger [115gr@970fps)..................970fps [240 ft/lb energy]

Pump Airpistol (10 pumps-MAX)............550fps [advertised as 600 fps] 6.2 ft/lb of energy

CO2 1911 airpistol..............................430 fps [advertised as 440 fps] 5 ft/lb of energy

CO2 .22 cal airpistol (modified by me)...480 fps [advertised as 460 fps] 8 ft/lb of energy

22cal "high power" air rifle....................1,100 fps [advertised as 1,000 fps] 43 ft/lb of energy

Pump Air Rifle (10 pumps max).............750 fps [advertised as 770 fps] 12 ft/lb of energy

Paintball gun (CO2)..............................250 fps (all paintball guns are supposed to be set no higher than 300 fps) 6 ft/lb

Airsoft "Desert Eagle"...........................235 fps (I'm told that airsoft guns are supposed to be set no higher than 300 fps for safety though there are 500 fps ones available for "snipers" which are not supposed to be used at close range) 3.5 ft/lb energy

NERF gun (disc type).............................55 fps [velocity not advertised] 1.21 ft/lb energy (which drops dramatically the instant the projectile leaves the barrel)

Very interesting, thanks.

Never thought of running a NERF gun over the chronograph. :p

One time a bunch of us were standing around at work talking about guns when a woman asked, "What is it about guys and guns? Why do you like them so much?"

None of us gave her a very good answer, but it got me thinking: Why DO we like them so much?

One day, the answer came to me: almost every recreational pursuit men enjoy involves a projectile. Think about it...baseball, basketball, football, (hell, ANY-ball), golf, horseshoes, darts, tennis, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, ping pong...the list goes on and on. You could even make an argument for sex. Then there are the sports where the projectile is YOU: surfing, skydiving, skiing, sledding, motorcycling, mountain biking, zip-lining, flying.

I know that many women enjoy the shooting sports (I have daughters), and I'm glad they do, but can you imagine any of the women in your life using a chronograph for recreation, or to kill a few hours like ZeSpectre did?

Interesting theory, Captaingyro. I think that it has to do more with risk and competition. How else would you explain gambling and video games?

Of course there are some guys that like painting, home repairs, woodworking, and music so there is some kind of creative drive as well (this is what makes reloaders of some of us, I suppose).

Good point MasterDei. I like some of those things too (although I was born without a Dancing gene). I just got a kick out of ZeSpectre dragging out the chrono to kill a few hours. Wish I'd a' thought of it.

I do believe the drive to master projectiles is much stronger in the male of the species, and I'm sure this belief is politically incorrect on countless levels.
