Second Scout rifle report...

I got my second Steyr Scout yesterday. It is a like new GSI gun with black furniture and the old style bolt. It has all the Jeff Cooper goodies including the Turner Ching Sling.

1. There is a definite difference between the old and new bolts. Other than the round knob, Steyr has deleted some of the lightening cuts that the older style bolt had. The old bolt is literally swiss cheesed with various cuts. The newer bolts looks much like my old SBS Mountain Rifle's. The newer bolt is buttery smooth, as clearly Steyr has decided to give up on some of the extra touches in the name of pleasing the folks who couldn't stand the heavy bolt lift and roughness that the lightening cuts caused in the action. Oh, well.

Also, the whole butter-knife vs. ball thing is silly. Neither is a problem for me. Of course, I have a tendency to work the action on a bolt like I am trying to twist the head off of an alligator. I guess if I had a delicate touch the butter-knife or dreaded bolt-lift might be more of an issue.

2. I shot 160! rounds of Australian surplus ammo through it today. No light primer hits in either gun thus far.

3. Both Scouts exhibit almost identical accuracy. This despite the fact that the older gun's trigger is clearly about 1/2 pound heavier. The newer gun's trigger is identical in feel other than having a lighter pull.

I have been able to pull of sub-one inch groups with both rifles despite the extra wide reticle hairs. Of course, I used Fr. Frogs 100 yard scout targets. The SS is very accurate, even in the hands of a rifle novice like myself.

4. I LOVE using the scout to do 100 yard snap-shots at metal plates. Thank God for cheap Australian surplus ammo.

5. Once again, people who are actually considering the Scout can ignore the advice of some who claim that the bipod isn't sturdy enough. Unless you are planning on using it as a bludgeon, the integral bipod is excellent and incredibly handy. You could mount any bi-pod on the swivel or the accessory rail under the barrel, but why bother?

6. I have not gotten the hang of the Ching sling. I just haven't been able to loop up that quick. Practice, practice!

I need to get a flashlight and mount for my black Scout! And a .376!
