I scheduled a much needed day off work yesterday for the girlfriend and myself to go down to the Philadelphia Expo Center to the Eagle Arms Gun Show. Here are my various and sundry takeaways.

1.) I was surprised to find so many Saigas at relatively reasonable prices. X39s as well as 12s were available for $800 and under. Panic buying has not yet set in even after the ban on imports. I guess I shouldn't have been quite so surprised. I found a nice Mak90 for $700. Damn side nicer than the N-PAPs and C39s.

2.) I absolutely understand why people love FALs. It was the first time I ever got to handle one. Ergos are better than an M1. Wow. Still going with a PTR91F but I now get where FAL fanboys are coming from.

3.) The Zastava M77 308 is one of the most underpriced rifles on the market today. I picked one up and even with the factory import furniture, it fit and felt rock solid. Adjustable gas system and AK reliability at less than 6 bills? Hell yes!

4.) Gun people are (mostly) friendly people. Most had no problem letting us check out their stuff, handle it, etc. There were one or 2 vendors who were unfriendly but I also was up front about this being a "just looking" sojourn. I explained that I literally just paid for a CZ 452 17hmr Training Rifle and put a Vepr 12 on Layaway so my gun money for the month was already spent. More than a few told me it was money well spent. The only pushy salesfolk were the knife and crafts people.

5.) There are still good deals at these shows. Of course, being able to haggle helps.

6.) ALWAYS check something out hands on before you buy. I was sure I wanted a Romanian RPK. I fondled one today. No thanks. Hated the ergos. Same with the UTS Bullpup shotties. The way they fit me, I'd get kicked in the jaw.

7.) The loss of the Vepr 12 to the US market is really sad. The quality of the Catamount Fury isn't even close to the same. Even the Saiga 12s don't compare. Here's hoping Zastava steps up their game and comes out with a viable replacement for US gunnutz. I will be getting a Fury II since the price point is so low and will use it more than the Vepr. Going to baby the expensive one a bit...

8.) Bring non gun aficionados with you next time you go to the fun show. They'll find something they like. My girlfriend is now dead set on getting a Jap Arisaka. Who am I to say no? ;)

I absolutely understand why people love FALs.

Have an Imbel parts gun with a DSA Pic rail and an Aimpoint mounted. Shooting that rifle at 100 yards is very much like shooting a handgun at 3 yards.

Thanks for the report. :)

Great report and a day well spent, even if you couldn't buy anything. My brother has an FAL, an M1A, several M1s, and at one time I had an H&K 91. Best overall ergonomics, balance and handling of these four rifles went to the FAL, followed closely by the M1A and M1. The H&K wasn't even close in comparison.

Thanks for yer observations. +1 on the "always handle 'em..." comment. I try and attend a couple of the local shows a year if only to handle things I am interested in *before* I get to lusting for it.

I can't take my Wife to a Gun Show. She can find the most expensive gun in the place and get her want on in 5 minutes. :D

Is the market really that focussed on (mostly) eastern European imports? No mention of American-made guns?

AlexanderA,

you mean fine American brands like Browning and Winchester? ;)

Seriously though, saw some very nice Henry rifles and was thoroughly reassured by the solid build of PTR91s. Just wasn't my focus this time out. I'm an AK guy.

Vodoun Da Vinci,

Other than the Arisaka, the girlfriend "picked out" an Anschutz, a TacSol, and a Cooper. On the handgun end, she kept looking at Keltecs and Diamondbacks. Likes expensive rifles and garbage pistols, apparently.

Shhh.... don't tell anyone.... prices will go up....

I am just finishing up a project building up a "Dedicated Marksman Rifle" with one that I'll be writing a post about for THR. Galil type folding stock, PSL type muzzle break, and POSP scope using the Russian mount. It's a real sleeper.... I am VERY happy with it.

I went to one of two large gun shows here in Houston this weekend. Saigas were going for a minimum of $1200....glad I got my x39 saiga and 54R vepr when I did...ended up buying a x39 ar to build though :)

Jonnyc,

but not the legendary pickle guy I've read so much about. One disappointment was not getting to lay hands on a Sig556xi. I did get to handle a Tavor and was...underwhelmed. Sig might be the way to go. Very similar manual of arms to my AKs and Veprs.

Prices are coming down my way. The lull is getting ready to set in and people aren't buying like they used to. I snatched up a nice West German production Sig 220 for $460 with four mags off a greybeard at the last gun show. I'd bought from the guy before so I didn't want tot work him too hard. Plus we exchanged emails so I could let him know when I was in the market next time for some more purchases.

Unless the Republicans take a beating in the election, I think we can expect prices to keep settling lower and lower. Which is fine by me after having got a 39-2 in 90% for $240, and a Ruger Security Six 2.75" in 90% for $280.

Yup. Perhaps the only .308 that is more ergonomic is the AR platform, but the FAL is also a trimmer rifle, and a battle proven design. I really liked my AR-10 carbine, but if I had to choose one to fight with, it'd be my DSA para carbine. I'd choose a .308 AR over the other 7.62 battle rifles for precision long range work, though. No question about that.

Neither KT or DB are garbage. The KTs are just less refined, and the Diamondbacks are smack dab in the middle of the pack, running quality and pricing comparable to the S&W bodyguard and the Kahr CW380 that are also priced at ~$350.

Hmmmmmm..........I did not notice the absence of the pickle guy. I did drool a bit when I passed the ham/bacon guy, however. Unfortunately, none of the gun/ammo dealers elicited the same response.

There was an old Israeli Vz24 converted to 7.62 x51 on the same rack as an excellent condition Finnish M39 built on a Hex Receiver. They both wanted to come home with me. Alas, insufficient funds. For now.

Any pistol powder? Or was this guns and beef jerky only?

Just my personal observation, but in our area pistol powder isn't really in sort supply anymore. Most of the local guys have plenty, and Cabelas is usually pretty well stocked if you go during the week. I live an hour or so north of philly, I'm not sure where the OP is.

Gun shows are always fun. I went to one last weekend, and going to another this weekend.

I still saw Saiga's in the $500 range, but they are really starting to creep up in price now.

9mm and 22lr are available, but many still overprice 22's like its made of gold.

I wish SKS were still cheap (under $200). At this point in time, I think Mosin Nagant rifles are the last cheap milsurp rifles.

I owned a PTR 91. It destroyed brass and had more felt recoil. Also, to get the barrel out you better have a press. I purchased an FAL (DSA STG58 clone) and didn't look back. I love having an adjustable gas system and better ergonomics. Once you learn that gas system and get it dialed in, it is very reliable. I like mine so much that I found an Imbel parts kit and will soon build another FAL With a little bit of knowledge, you can maintain them in your garage and even build your own rifle. I personally think the FAL is a better built firearm and the ergonomics are better than the 91 clone.

Different strokes for different folks. I was just giving my experiences shooting both.

I went to the one at GRB, overall prices on everything seemed high. Saw a good assortment of pistol powder -- if you were desperate and willing to pay $40/lb :(

Best deals I saw were Kel-Tec KSG for $808, M&P 9 for $390, and GI 5.56 ammo cans for $10 out the door.

We had Dueling gun shows last week by different promoters, one at GRB, the other at NRG (Reliant), this generally meant less competition as the big five's presence was split instead of them all being there to compete.
