Well I guess as the saying goes, you never think it will happen to you.

About an hour a go I went to pick up pizza and was sitting at a light to make a u-turn. Out of the corner of my eye I see somebody walking across the three lanes to where I sat in the turn lane.
Then instead of crossing in front of me he walks over to my passenger door and tries to open it several times. He says something and obviously I didn't hear him as the window was up and I also was
listening to music. I looked at him with a "Are you retarded" look on my face and he said something else. Then I looked forward hoping the light would turn green. There was a car in front of me by the way.
He then continued on what I thought was his intended path to the other side of the road. Instead he walked over to my door and opened it up. I jumped out immediately and started yelling, can't exactly
recall what I said but, a lot of cursing and "what are you doing?" Afterward I realize I should have just backed up the moment he tried the door but I was kind of in shock that he tried that in the first place
to remember and lock my driver door. He said something about just getting out of jail and needing a ride somewhere. I then got back in and locked the door and like an idiot said
something about being more careful as people carry guns as he walked away. He then stopped in the middle of a lane past the middle of the intersection almost getting hit and turned around and came back
and started yelling how people from FL are all A..holes and then continued on.

I was more angry than scared when this happened then after making the u-turn and pulling into the pizza place I started shaking as I realized that could have been messier situation and lucky for me he was
really just drunk/high? or stupid and looking for a ride. Or maybe I just didn't fit his profile of somebody he'd like to rob after our altercation.

What I did learn from this is pay attention more to my surroundings, lock "both doors," and don't procrastinate any more about getting my CCW permit. I'm getting on it like tomorrow first thing in the morning.
I don't intend to be a part of statistics on car jacking.

I'm glad it worked out. He wouldn't try that in TX. Our castle law applies to our cars. No CCL required.

You've already figured out what you did wrong, so no need for lectures.

The one thing I would stress is that I think people really should call the police about things like this even if there's no violence done. He's going to keep at it and a messy situation might result with someone else. You might prevent that, or at least provide a valuable reference/witness for another solid citizen he cold harass, and that could be very valuable.

You were wise to de-escalate it when you did and move away. You'll do it more quickly next time.

As soon as he opened my driver side door he would have seen the business end of a 45. I always keep my doors locked but sometimes I find myself not paying attention to my surroundings. Glad everything went ok for you and hurry up and get that permit.

Well now this worries me a little. Locking my doors does nothing - I keep the windows rolled down since I don't have AC. The high around here gets up around 100 deg F. If I see someone suspicious, I'll roll my windows up or use my knife if they try to jump in the car, but for now I think driving around in 100 degree heat with my windows up isn't the best bet. Only thing I can do is be alert.

i always lock my doors but my windows are all down in the bronco i discovered i get better mileage with the windows down for my 3-55 ac to work right (3 windows and 55mph)

but the doors are lock the the gun is there

but the windows up sint an option since i drive a dark car and todays temp was 107 with heat index and 99% humidity

I forgot to add that I did call the police after my anger subsided and the whole situation sunk in.

Good move. That's a responsible thing. People think, "why bother?" or "I don't want to talk to the police," - but the more they know, the better they can do their jobs.

Cars are an extention of the Castle Doctrine in FL AFAIK.

Yeah I should be carrying in my car even though I don't have my CCW yet. I try to stay out of bad situations like not going out at after dark but this time it was just getting pizza.
Next time there WILL be a loaded piece in my truck, car, van or whatever I'm driving for the next joker who tries this. Lucky for me there will be a next time.

Now that it's over and I calmed down it's kind of funny about what he said about just getting out of jail.
Was that supposed to make me want to give him a ride? "Hey buddy, trying to force your way into my vehicle, you're an ex-con?..... well jump in, and where to?"

TEXASBORN,that is one of the many things that makes me glad I moved to Texas.I have personaly seen hitchhikers forcefuly try to get into cars.who in their right mind even does that!

All's well that ends well. Get your "permit to exercise an inalienable right" and be prepared. Glad you're safe.

"Hey buddy, trying to force your way into my vehicle, you're an ex-con?..... well jump in, and where to?"

Probably any ole liquor store or convenience mart would have done fine. Preferably one without a functioning cc video...

One thing I learned as a result of police patrol is to always try to leave enough room between me and the car in front. I buried myself in traffic enough times at intersections to know that's when Murphy comes aknockin". Countless times, I sucked up close to the car in front and had someone behind me pull up pretty tight and that's when the hot call comes in. I learned to stop doing that.... the learning curve was long. :banghead: Now I find I usually do it all of the time regardless of what I'm driving.

Obviously it doesn't always work depending on the what lane you are in and traffic, etc, but most times you can leave yourself enough room to pull around someone stopped in front of you if need be. Probably doesn't work all that well in a large urban area, but I rarely spend a lot of time in those places.

It's a good defensive tactic to use. Locking your doors is another habit to embrace.

Ok we all agree on doors locked. We all agree it is best to be armed.
Why in the heck did you jump out of your car though? That to me seems like a very bad move.....I'd think you are way more safe IN the car. What if you'd found yourself in hand to hand combat with the idiot? That might have even been part of his plan, get you out of the car so he could jump in...and drive off.
I know it was probably an impulse, glad you are safe, but you really ought to rethink jumping out of a car at a confrontation.

I've heard of too many people staying in the vehicle and being "trapped" in that position. At that moment I figured at least we would be on equal footing instead of him stabbing/punching or
whatever while I sat there in the seat. He was much larger than me. I'm 160 lbs and he was an easy 220 so by getting out maybe he realized I wasn't going to just sit and take whatever he
planned dishing out. He probably wasn't going to try anything but in my head I think that by getting out instead of sitting there he thought twice about doing anything. When I typed this
originally after I came home I didn't put every exact detail in there. After he opened the door and until I pulled up to the pizza place and realized what just happened are still fuzzy.
I was pumping with adrenaline hard core. When I got out I do remember saying something about how we were right in front of a bunch of cars and people. The truth is there wasn't really too
much traffic and although there were several people in shouting distance nobody said anything, like "everything OK." I guess they figured it wasn't their business. Nice to know people care so much.
It seemed like the right thing to do at the time and I would still do the same in that situation of the door being opened. Like I said he already had opened the door so it caught me off guard.

I also forgot to mention if this guy was high/drunk he did not show it. He seemed to walk OK and wasn't slurring his speech. He was at least 45-50. He was jacked though. If the jail story is true
I imagine it was spent working out. Heck he was even freshly shaven, crew cut and dressed nice like he just came from a club or something. He certainly did not look like a criminal.

I did enjoy the pizza by the way. It wasn't to die for though. ;)
