It's already been said, but from your initial post she seems really against a firearm, so get her a big ol' can of this:
I realize it's not as good as a firearm, but better then nothing. If she does agree to getting a gun, she must be willing to practice with it (even if it is only once a month), and then be willing to use it if need be, otherwise it's a paperweight, and nothing more. Let her make the choice as to what size/shape it is as she is the one who will need to be comfortable with it.
Lance, just because a woman (or man for that matter) isn't willing to own/use a firearm doesn't mean that aren't willing/able to defend themselves and their family. I know a woman or two who would fight tooth and nail to defend themselves and their kids (and fight very well) but would never consider owning a gun. Does this mean they will win in every situation?? No, but neither will you just because you own/carry a firearm.
Some people just don't want the extra responsibilty that comes with owning a firearm, it doesn't make them weak or helpless.
