The NRA is a pretty controversial topic right now. I’m not a huge fan but here’s something I never considered…

Instruction.

There are a lot of instructors out there certified by the NRA. The NRA provides standardization in training so if someone has taken training from an NRA certified instructor you know exactly what that means. It’s not some Joe Schmos training school for randoms.

In fact, NRA instruction is written into some
Laws in some states. If you want to get certain training, say security guard or something, a lot of that is mandated to be taught by an NRA certified instructor. If the NRA ceases to exist then there is no standardization. All those certificates mean nothing. All those rules/laws need to be rewritten. All those instructors might now be out of work because they’re just “nobody’s” now.

Hence why some of us are so mad at the NRA. Not only does the misbehaver of the NRA leadership hurt the 2A community from a lobbying/political point of view but it hurts on the practical training, safety training, and competitive shooting sides and several other areas that the NRA supported the 2A community. Other groups will have to step up to provide these for the 2A community if the NRA cannot right the ship. Some of that is already starting as a few groups are already seeking these services from other sources. If the NRA continues as they are the very small trickle will rapidly turn into a flood.

I still support the NRA. They have done a lot more good than one rotten egg at the top has done bad.

I would say you have not look closely enough at how much and for how long that bad egg has been wasting members money. He is not alone, he has several cronies that help keep him in power and help him waist membership funds. My support will go else where until such time that WLP is removed AND the bylaws are rewritten so that the next person in his position is answerable to the Board of Director and the Membership in general.

This. I keep hoping someone at NRA actually has the long term interests of the org, and the shooting sports in the US in mind, will — if they can't just fix the whole org — spin off or otherwise more strongly segregate the operations of the training/education/certification side from the rest of things, to protect it from legal fallout if not public opinion as well.

I remember the 80s when NRA could get into pretty much any school, and cities would use them, for safety lectures and stuff. That sort of straight "non-political" work would do a LOT more for the politics of firearms ownership than any of the stuff we get now, but is vastly impossible in the majority of locales now, and blatant malfeasance by the leadership really drives home the point for anyone who disagrees with their messaging otherwise, makes them someone to keep your distance from. Missed opportunity, and +1000 as to why some of us are so mad at NRA indeed.

As if the salaries and benefits are out of line with similar positions at other non-profits. Sad when fellow Second Amendment believers follow the New York Times narrative.

This has nothing to do with salaries or the New York Times narrative this has to do with million of dollars of NRA member funds being wasted and/or funneled to WLP's and his cronies. This is supported by well respected member of the 2A community both from outside and inside the NRA including former BoD members of the NRA. No doubt the NYT and other anti-2A groups is having a field day with this information but that does not make it any less true.

Staff decided that we weren't going to do a rehash of the pros and cons of the NRA and its personnel problems. It will degenerate rather quickly and the issues are known.
