Sonic cleaner

I use my sonic cleaner on brass, does quite a bit better than I expected. I recently got some stuff from a friend who happens to be a lawnmower mech. and it works great. Trouble is, it runs about $500 trillion bucks a quart.

I have been thinking on buying some Hornady Sonic cleaner.

How well does it work on brass?

Decades in the past and I mean decades a powdered soap was used in the engineering laboratory ultrasonic cleaner. I'd fill the ultrasonic cleaner with hot water and a table spoon of powered soap. Afterwards dumped the contents into a sink and flushed with warm water. The brass was clean with all traces of powder & primer residue removed.

These cleaners may be great for easy to remove residue. I vibrate and used to tumble.
I work on pocket watches (hobby). Feller brought me a timepiece his mom had sprayed with WD-40. It was a mess.. The feller had first took the watch to a watchman who supposedly cleaned it in an ultrasonic. It did not remove the dried on film WD-40 leaves. I did it the old way with pig brissle brush & watch cleaner. That stuff is awful to remove.
So I never got a ultrasonic and am happy as can be.

The Hornady one shot ultrasonic cleaner solution works great! I'd give it 5 stars. A quart bottle should last for a long time, it's a concentrated citric acid with a bit of soap that's mixed 40 to 1. It will do many loads once it's mixed, it will get dirty, then it needs to be tossed out.

If you've got some brass that's been exposed to lots of rain, it'll look black, that's discolored brass, not corrosion. The US cleaned with the Hornady one shot cleaner will take that black off, leaving clean bright brass. It will NOT be shiny, to get that knock yer eyes out shine, you need to tumble in corn cob with some sort of abrasive made for brass.

The US cleaner with the Hornady stuff will get every bit of primer residue out of d-primed brass. Also, all the carbon INSIDE the brass. My HF cleaner needs 3-8 minute sessions to clean up the crustiest brass. Some say that's too much bother to keep track of turning it back on, I say so what? I have the cleanest brass around, especially after a tumble with 20-40 corn cob and flitz tumbler additive.

Get the 20-40 corn cobb from drill spot . com. They're the retail arm of grainger, it's much finer than the stuff you normally find at gun shops. The lizard bedding stuff from pet stores is way too big for small cases like .223 up to .270. It'll jam in the cases so tight, you'll be picking it out all night rather than be loading them.

I have some of the Hornady Sonic Cleaner. Works pretty good. Now for the but....it is pretty pricey too. You might want to try citric acid (found in the canning supplies at the grocery store) and a little Dawn dishsoap. Works just as well IMHO and cost is a fraction of the Hornady Sonic cleaner.

Lets do a little math here. The above Hornady one shot is normally 20 bucks for a quart,(it's on sale right now for 18 bucks). That's mixed 40 to 1 to make the solution. That means it'll make 20 GALLONS of cleaner! Ummm, lets see,,,--- that's a dollar per gallon!!! Unless you're US cleaning all day long, every day, it'll take years to use 20 gal. of cleaner. I'm still using the first 2 quarts I made up 6 months ago.

Is that lemi-shine concentrated? I'd bet it is not. So you have to use most of a bottle to make a US cleaner full of it. How much is it? I'll check the next time I'm at wally world, not that I'll buy any, I already have my best answer.

Thanks Snuffy. You answered my questions. I tried the dish soap, citric acid stuff and it did ok but not like this stuff from my friend. He sez the Hornady stuff works just as well so guess I will order a qt. Got it bookmarked. Thanks

+1 on the hornady. I have reloaded 5k plus rounds and have well over half the quart left.
