I will be turning 21 in January, Could I start the paperwork and transfer of a MG now since I know it's a long wait? If I have to wait until my 21st birthday

Also, what would be the best full auto to get in the 3k-4500 dollar range? I would like it to be able to shoot .22 as well as a larger caliber, I have seen there is a .22 conversion for the M11 or 10 I forget which one but one of them. Is that my only option in that price range? I would be looking for something I could have fun shooting, but not worrying about decreasing value as well since I'm not big on safe queens.

I'm not sure about the age question.

As for the affordable first machine gun, I would urge you to save up a bit more money and get something you will really enjoy, instead of reducing your choices to the very bottom of the market. Having a .22 capability will be a bit tricky, because most of the fullauto .22s are significantly more expensive (specifically because they can use cheap ammo, which makes them desireable).

If you move your price range up by $1k, you can take your choice of a bunch of good submachine guns - Sterling (my favorite), Reising, Sten, and a few others. You could also look at an FNC, which should be possible to get a .22 kit for.

What kind of gun do you really want? I would start looking at subguns.com and sturmgewehr.com now, and get a feel for what's out there and at what prices (remember, sadly, you cannot buy a pre-sample or post-sample gun; those are only for dealers). There are good deals out there if you have some patience, and you'll be much happier with a gun you really want than if you buy the first one you can afford.

An FNC for $5,500? I am so glad I can't even be tempted to spend that much cash... That's my "grail" 5.56 MG.

I'd also suggest that if you decide you want to go with the M-11/9, you should save some extra cash and send it all off to Lage: http://max-11.com/

Not just .22 conversion kits, but lots of stuff to turn the little room broom into something quite nice!

The bad things is you'll probably end up spending just as much in the end. The good thing is you can collect the bits a few hundred $$$ at a time. The other good thing is when you're done you might have something that's actually a bit better than some guns you could spend that cash on up front.

(Of course, who wouldn't want a Sterling? Just so cool!)

So, does anyone know though If I would be able to start the paperwork now on something? Like I know it's a good 6-8 month wait, I would be 21 before it was even in my possession.

Your answer can probably be found by looking at the paperwork. It might have a statement somewhere on it about being "age 21 on or before this date" as in the date on which the paperwork is signed. It was that way for my concealed carry license. I wanted to take the classs literally the day before my 21st birthday, but I had to wait a week because of that particular little statement about being 21 "on or before the date" of my class. It's a bummer, but you'll be 21 before long!

True, that's how it was on the application to be a police officer here it said you must be 21 by the time you finish the training courses and stuff. Maybe I will just have to E-mail a C3 dealer and maybe they can answer my question

Pretty sure they do. Although I was thinking about the AR model since you mentioned wanting multiple calibers. I have the left hand AR model and a .22 conversion kit. It doesnt much care for bulk ammo though. Cci Mini mags run just fine though.

304-616-4500

Call that number and talk with the NFA and get it straight from the horses mouth

as for a MG in the 3-4.5k range a MAC would be your best bet either the 10 or 11/9 the 380 version is shorter than the 9 and limited to 380 and 22

I would get a MAC 10 and get Lage uppers in 45, 9, and 22 and slow them down as much as possible

and dont forget the can :D

If you buy an MG from a resident of your state FTF you can transfer it on a Form 4 and not have to be 21, since it isn't going through a dealer. I'm sure there are lots of MGs in Arizona. Take a look around, talk to guys at the range, ask around and see if anyone has anything they're willing to sell.

+1 TurtlePhish

You only have to be 21 to purchase from a dealer.

18 to purchase directly from and in-state individual.

Are you referring to sale from a dealer or sale from a nonlicensee?

You are able to purchase from a nonlicensee right now.

I suppose you COULD start the forms and indicate you are under 21 on the form and leave that up to ATF.

Wow really? I never knew that I thought that only applied if you manufacturing a SBR or suppressor. I was looking at a converted ruger mini 14 in Utah, but ya like you said tons of MG's here.

Thanks I totally didn't know that. Could I still go a dealer to have them help me with the paperwork? Would it work like a private party sale with no dealer involved? Except waiting for my paperwork to get approved still before I take possession? Or would seller drop it off at a dealer to hold after I paid in full then I pick it up from then when my paperwork is accepted? Like the Scottsdale Gun Club?

Bingo. I'm sure you could have a dealer help you with the paperwork, as long as they don't fill it out like they're doing the transfer. The paperwork isn't too complicated, though. You should be able to get it done on your own or with a little help from THR if you have questions.

Yes, it is EXACTLY a private sale. Involving a dealer at all will put you back into the 'under 21' dilemma you are trying to avoid. And as competent as the folks at SGC are, if they "hold" it, they do so based on a Form 3 transfer from the seller and you are , once more, in the 'under 21' problem area. They might be willing to help with the paperwork, but given that you are not a paying customer their hearts might not be in it.

You can get the forms you need online or through the mail and there are plenty of folks around who have smacked the ball through all the wickets enough times to be of some use.
