I-81 is one of the most heavily used trucking routes in the US. VA keeps bringing up adding more lanes or maybe a truck lane there but never takes any action.

The trucks make it unsafe to speed as they are frequently going 15-25 MPH under the speed limit to make it up the hills. If you are going 15 over and the truck is going 25 under now we have a speed dif of 40 MPH. People get killed on that road every week for this very reason. On the more than one occasion in the last five years whole families in SUVs have been wiped out.

If you want to drive 80 move to Texas or MT or some place else where it is legal.

A spokesman for the Greenville police said the chief will review the matter and make a recommendation to the city manager on whether to continue Cmeyla's employment.

one would think it would take about ten seconds to decide this guy needs to find employment elsewhere. I am astounded that he is still employed. this incident happened some time ago. the city has had many months to consider whether it wants to continue his employment.

the miracle is that the whole incident was not just buried, as seems to happen in many such cases.

The same is true of I-64 between Richmond and VA Beach. Virginia in incapable of doing anything. We have the most lets-talk-about-it-but-then-do-nothing state gov in the country.

Further, I'll wager his carreer as a police officer is over. No department would hire such a volatile individual in a job with so much discretion. The b/g checks done during pre-employment will turn this incident up.

Really? On February 19, 2007 Anthony Abbate, an off duty Chicago police officer, severely beat a woman bartender. That incident was captured on the bar's video camera.

According to Chicago's CBS2 report:

Abbatte is no stranger to drunken behavior.

He was one of 100 Chicago police officers who had been hired despite having prior drug or alcohol related driving offenses.

Abbate had also been arrested for drag racing and driving on a suspended license.

"Until you told me we did not know he had a prior DUI," Ekl said to CBS 2's Dave Savini.

The night of the attack Chicago police were called, but when they arrived Abbate was long gone.

If convicted, Abbate could get two to five years in prison. His bond was set at $70,000. Abbate has been relieved of his duties and Chicago police are moving to terminate him.

When Savini interviewed him 5 years ago, Abbate said he was sorry for his prior drunk driving and would never do anything like that again. He was also named in a civil rights suit back then. That plaintiff is deceased.

We know at least that Abbate had been arrested for drag racing, driving without a license, and drunk driving, and was named in a civil rights suit.

Background checks did not prevent the hiring of 100 Chicago police officers despite prior drug or drunk driving offenses.

Reports of Chicago police officers beating civilians seem to be less than rare events. It's a toddling town. The Chicago police appear to be turning at least some of the people they serve and protect into toddlers. :)
