I don't mean this post to sound like a stand-off between the southern and northern parts of the state. I realize we have supporters of the second ammendment in the Chicago area, and believe me,...I DON'T LIKE THE STATUS QUO ANY BETTER THAN THEY DO!!!:cuss::cuss::cuss:

But, let's face the facts here. Living in Southern Illinois and living in Northern Illinois are two different things.

The vast majority of Southern Illinoisians are pro-second ammendment, while the vast majority of Northern Illinoisians are not. It's not because we don't have any support in the north, it's because the majority of our lawmakers and the anti-gun nuts live there.

Most Southern Illinoisians' would love to see ILLINOIS become 2 different states. Springfield, and everything north of becoming the state of NORTHERN ILLINOIS, with Springfield, as their capitol.

Everything south of Springfield should become SOUTHERN ILLINOIS, with Vandalia, as it's capitol, like it was during Abraham Lincoln's reign.

It's been a very longtime since ILLINOIS had a downstate Governor, and you won't find a lot of Northern lawmakers support here. They don't care about the people in Southern Illinois, they just want to govern us under Chicago laws and bilk us of our tax $$$DOLLARS$$$.:cuss::cuss::cuss:

I don't think you want to include all of northern Illinois as anti gun.

Once you get out past the burbs of Chicago into the corn it isn't any different than southern Illinois.

What goes around... keeps going around

Northern and southern Illinois have always had divisive views.

For example:

Abraham Lincolns campaign speaches were custom tailored to the northern and southern parts of Illinois.

The speeches that he made in the north of Illinois reflected an anti-slavery note, while the speeches he made in southern Illinois reflected, lets just say, an "I like Slavery" content.

Don't forget Jim Edgar was a "downstate governor". He didn't do us any favors.
Also check your history. Abe Lincoln and the "Long Nine" were the driving force getting the capital moved to Springfield.

For all the southern Illinois talk, I know alot of gun owners from the area that are just hunters and don't care at all about a magazine ban. The issue is more than just geographic.

My father's side of the family came from The Marion/Carbondale/Carterville area. Dad graduated from Southern Illinois University High School. He was transplanted to Kansas courtesy of Uncle Sam's Air Force.

It never took long after we crossed the bridge over the Mississippi at Chester and went past the Popeye statue that we were in a very different part of the country.

The only place I'd ever heard of that closed a state highway to let the snakes migrate.

Then there's Doctor Dale Cavaness, the old country doctor from Saline county who killed 2 sons for insurance and other reasons. That story was detailed in a book called "Murder in little Egypt" you can find at Amazon.

The Big Muddy Monster, a sasquatch-like create supposedly found along the banks of the Big Muddy River.

Oh, can't forget Sparta, Illinois. They filmed the original "in the Heat of the Night" movie there. Apparently they couldn't find a southern enough town in the South to make the movie, but they did find one in Southern Illinois.

I think the "Northern versus Southern" thing goes way deeper than geography. FWIW don't take this as a slam to the area as I'm going back after not being there for 20 years to take in Giant City, Shawnee National forest and look up some geneology.

Yup, that's a good book.
Also "Bloody Williamson" which covers more than just Williamson Co.

All I know is that I live in MI and my family is traveling over to Chicago tomorrow for a wedding and I won't be going on the grounds that it's a communist/socialist/liberal hell hole.

I've already stepped into California once while I was in Arizona. I was younger and we were on vacation at the time so I had no choice. It shall NEVER happen again.

______________

I've heard of it, never found it yet.

Dad's impression of Darcy O'Brien's book for describing Southern illinois during the 50's and 60's was, I quote, "dead on".

Good point, but the line's off..

Being originally from Springfield, I think you drew the line a little too far to the south.

I74 might be closer, but I think that would cut off our brethren in NW Illinois..

I think using the Chicago MSA would be best..

Steve

PS> California has the same problem.. Just it's a 3 way split, not two..:what:
(I lived there, too, for 17 years..)

I don't think the problem is North/South so much as it is the entire state being politically dominated by one megalopolis in which the power structure fears the power of an armed citizenry. Illinois with Chicago is no different than New York with NYC. Until the power of the urban political machine is broken, nothing will change.:cuss::cuss::banghead::banghead::banghead:

If Cook County were to slide into Lake Michigan one day, and East St Louis slid into the River, Illinois would be a pretty decent place.

Exactly! I hate it, but I will be traveling there (down state not Chicago) shortly to see the family. Most down staters, i.e. not Chicago, are pro-2A. It's too bad the population is so slanted to the urban h***.

"...Northern and Southern Illinois..." Out of the idlest of curiosity, where is the dividing line?
"...campaign speaches were custom tailored..." They still are. Everywhere.

Out of the idlest of curiosity, where is the dividing line?

Usually you'll here folks say "north of I80" or "south of I80"

Urban sprawl is such that you find bliss ninnies along the I80 corridor now so the line isn't clear. Also as I pointed out earlier NW Illinois is much like south Illinois.

I live in the western part of the state known as "The lost world".
Everything north of I80 counts as the evil empire.

I might be butting in where I shouldn't, but my grandfather lived all his life in Bureau County, Ill.

Many years ago now, when I was just 6 years old, he took me fishing. I remember 2 things about the trip, I caught a blue-gill, and my grandfather told me never to go to Chicago.

It's more than a Northern/Southern Illinois thing. I would like to say it's a Cook Co. versus 101 lesser counties. It's also a "free man" versus "government as nanny" mentality. There are those that hold the "free man" view all over the state. There is also a growing "nanny government" group all over.

I couldn't believe it when Blago the Terrible won my county (Pope). I was ill! I try to blame it on all those that migrated from the north. A strong Union presence didn't help.

We really need to look at kicking Cook Co. out of the state! That's the only way the rest of Illinois will ever a good State.
