Southern Illinois v.s. Northern Illinois

I grew up in North Central Illinois, school at SIUC, and first job in Danville (East Central) and it seemed to be a lot better then now. Illinois is an example of how population centers can skew entire regions with socialist, soccer-mom, california style politics.

I really cannot comprehend how voters continue to put these idiots in positions of power! Maybe if you had an IQ test for voting and anyone who was under 50 IQ points wouldn't be allowed to vote, you could get them out. But for now, non-Chicagoans get little representation and Chicago politics just plain suck.

I would like to say it's a Cook Co. versus 101 lesser counties

If it was only Crook County the odds would be better in the legislature, but unfortunetly some of the "collar" counties are electing RINOs who are Antis.

Oh great. I have to fly to Chicago next weekend and I read this thread. My wife escaped from there a few years ago, then made the mistake of going back "to visit." Now I gotta go "rescue her" and bring her back to Free Virginia.

You have NO idea how I'm looking forward to this trip.

CajunBass,,,while you are standing around Chicagoland smiling at the new inlaws, casually ask,,,,"Soooo, any good gunshops around here??:D

But, let's face the facts here. Living in Southern Illinois and living in Northern Illinois are two different things.

I must say, I quite enjoyed Southern Illinois, the times I went there when #1 son was at SIU. I'd put the line of demarcation about an hour south of Springfield, where things seem to change.

I'm straight west of Chicago, but a ways yet from the Big River. This area is completely different from Chicago.

I'm tempted to say wall off Chicago, but they tend to leak out. Not 20 miles from me is a huge housing development that is essentially weekend villas for rich Chicagoons.

I couldn't believe it when Blago the Terrible won my county (Pope). I was ill!

I couldn't believe it when they ran Blago for gov. His sole and only claim to fame before that was a VPC inspired "pocket rocket" bill as US Rep.

<LOL> They already think I'm some kinda gun toting, Bible beating, take to the hills counter revolutionary, and I've corrupted their little girl. She now has a CHP and loves to shoot.

North of I-80 and West of I-355 pretty much gathers in all the socialists.

A few have escaped to some suburbs South of 80 but we pretty much can tell them to shut up and sit down. Like the lady last fall that went nuts and called the Police Chief in town when she wsaw a "man with a gun" in the field acorss the street from her house.

It was a farmer hunting his own picked over corn field for ringnecks.

The refugees are a bigger problem in the Western and Northwestern "burbs" where they try and transplant the "Chicago Way" to Naperville, Wheaton and other areas.

Those are the areas that Rahm Emmanuel (D - Chicago, where vote fraud is an art form) targeted in the '06 elections, running hand made candidate Tammy Duckworth running with Sarah Brady and Paul Helmke as her spokespeople at some campaign events. He lost that one but won a few others.

You fail to understand.

There IS no "Illinois".
There is a State called Chicago with a large and totally insignificant suburb called "Illinois".

Everything is done for the totally important State of Chicago, but the suburb called "Illinois" has importance ONLY during elections when great promises are made to it to insure the rubes vote "right" (Democratic).
As soon as the election is over, the suburb of "Illinois" can be safely ignored until the next election.

Once you get this straight, everything else falls in line and can be understood.

Oldest brother USED to live in 'the Burbs' (Napeirville, IIRC) when Hot Rod Roddy Blago was the US Rep. I have the correct pronunciation of Hot Rods name, but it is pretty well "Low Road".

After said brother moved to near KC, Kansas, he said he had almost forgotten he lived in the USA.

He also wished that C(r)ook County would break off and sink into The Lake, much like remarks made about certain Large Western states. Did have some concern about the environmental contamination impact on the lake if that happened, though...

Cajunbass,

You've got a PM and invite to shoot.

I'vve been complining my ideas on "What Needs to Be Done in Illinois" and will start a thread once I'm done wordsmithing/polishing my ideas. I know you all just can't wait for that masterpiece to be posted...... :D

"DonP I think you mean east of I-355"

Doh! See what happens when the batteries on my GPS unit run down!

Yup, definitely East of I-355 and North of I-80.

Thanks for the fix.

bigfish said: I guess I have the Southern attitude. Everything north of Danville, Bloomington,Peoria, and Moline is Chicago.

Actually, most of my relatives in Williamson county believed that anything North of Mount Vernon was damnyankee Chicagoans!

+1 on anything north of I64 being NOT SOUTH ILLINOIS!

We had Poshard going up against Ryan and ALOST won! Then Poshard turned chicken and wouldn't run again. Told us hicks that we should vote for so-so! We trusted Glenn and he stabbed us in the backs! That's how Hot Rod got back in!

But if it wasn't for Chi-Town, than SI IL might not have the IDOC as its main "industry"! The mining conpanies broke the UMWA's back, they will be opening up the mines again, nonunoin, so that will get some monay flowing again.

Jerry, still longing to get back to SEMO!

Someone posted earlier that the SO folks don't care about a 10-round ban. Well, alot don't! And it can be summed up by me misquoting someone who posted it on an auto vs wheelgun tread, we don't watch that much tv!

I hired in to IDOC 15 years ago. I got my first real exposure to NO IL at the training center and then working six months at Statesville and Joilet. On ragne week, the SOs didn't complain about the S&W M64 revolver and the six rounds of +p 38 special it held. NOs bitched and moaned about it! They wanted their "9s". They wanted A BUNCH of ammo! Its not that we down in SO don't want more than ten rounds, its just that we would feel real bad about missing ten times and needing more shots! If I can't stop him in the two or three rounds I first get off, then I ain't staying around! And as far as carrying a wheelgun while transporting inmates, we took the Mini or a shotgun! Those were the first line of defense, and should always be so! We had the M64s (great weapons BTW) on our hips, but the longguns were laying across our laps! Alot of SOs were given a rifle or shotgun as their first weapon. It was for ducks or squirrels. It could feed you, and it could protect you. A handgun is looked on as a neat thing to have, but if I had to reach for a handgun or a rifle, I'm reaching for a longgun period!

Another thing about a ten round limit....do you remember the feel of a JMB Hi Power? The slim grip and balanced feel? Or how about a STAR BM? Now image one of these hi cap "wondernines" slimmed down instead of a fat grip and a hollow mottom part of a mag. Or the Hi Power slimmed down by more than 20%.......or the STAR BM coming back! I carry a small 5-shot wheelgun, half of the ten round limit. I feel ok. If I don't, the 30/30 or SKS is in the trunk or behind the seat.

SO folks are also pretty much poor! Our arsenal might include a single shot shotgun that we had growing up, no you can't buy it cause the boy is going to need it soon. And a 22 rifle of some sorts, almost always a Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22 or something from way back when you could stop down at Sears or JCPenneys and buy a longgun. If its got a scope on it, it sure didn't cost as much as the gun or bigger than a spare tire. And a good pump 12ga, 28-30" barrel. If you are "well to do", you might have a 20"ish deer barrel for it also. But its a smooth bore, no screw in chokes around here. If a handgun is included, its a 38 wheelgun. Do we feel that's all the weapons one should own, no, its all the weapons we can afford right now! We're scared to buy anything, cause we might have to pawn it next week for truck repair or dr bills.

I lived in Illinois for the first 23 years of my life and just assumed that gun laws were the same everywhere in America. Then I moved to North Dakota and went pistol plinking with a couple of my new friends. When I left the range I just tossed my .22 pistol in my glove box and took off. Before I reached home, I was pulled over by a sheriff's deputy because I am a speeder.

I was nervous... so nervous that it showed and he asked why I was nervous. Seeing .22 shells strewn about my little Ford Ranger, he asked if I had a gun. I told him it was in the glove box and started appologizing. He didn't even check the gun and told me, "It's the people's right to have guns. Don't be nervous, you're not doing anything wrong."

I hate even going to Illinois now because I will have to take the 1911 from my center consol. I will never move back!

I spent the first 36 years of my life in Illinois. Cook and the collar counties are a political reality. Unless the rest of the state forgets political affiliation, race, religion, pro-life/pro-choice, pro-gun/anti-gun, universal health care/market system, and anything else that polarizes and instead votes for state-wide candidates because he/she is downstate, the 'downstate' counties are going to continue to be disenfranchised by the political clout of Cook and the collar counties. I was there when the Crazy 8 had a little political influence but it didn't last long. There are effectively two seats of government - Springfield & Chicago - and they often don't 'govern' the same way with respect to policies etc. Southern Illinois used to be one of the greatest places I have ever been to camp, hunt, hike, etc.; may still be for all I know. The Beardstown area had some of the best waterfowl hunting and most egregious 'outlaws' anywhere. I still have my last FOID just as a friendly reminder of what can happen. In my youth I spent a lot of time hunting in Richland & Douglas counties where I grew up. in the 60's central Illinois pheasant hunting was compared to Iowa, Nebraska, etc. in opportunity and number of birds. Farmers took care of that by clearing hedge and fence rows, plowing waterways, giving up growing hay crops for row crops, etc.; can't blame them they had to make the payments on some of the most expensive farm land in the world some way.

We moved to Ohio in 1982. My guns stayed in the closet almost 20 years but I am making up for lost time now. The only thing that keeps Ohio from being Illinois is the fact that we have the 'three pearls' that split the urban vote as of now. The rural counties still have a lot of clout but that can change in a second with the wrong combination of statewide party leadership. We have one of the most racist mayors in the country in Columbus and he has statewide aspirations so it will be interesting here politically for the next few years.

If anyone is interested in seeing which counties went Democratic for governor then they can go to the IL State Board of Elections site.
There were sure a lot of southern IL counties which went Democratic for Blagojevich in 2006. The blue highlighted counties voted for Blagojevich. Jackson Co was within 111 votes of going Democratic. Johnson Co was within 395 votes of going Democratic.

Blubbering idiots. Now look at what they have gone and done. They're getting what they deserve.

Yep, gotta admit it. Northern Il ain't nothin like Southern. Sad to say. I live not far south of the Wisconsin border. It is small town, but the mindset is creeping toward Chicago. Or, I should say Chicago is creeping out here.

Some how, some way we have got to get people to separate themselves from Chicago domination. I have no bright ideas how to do it.

You would think simple pocket-book issues would convince people, all the money we send Chicago every year, but look how many southern counties voted for Blago. Un be liev able!

Anybody ever seen a 'balance of taxes' statement? I would love to know how much state money Chiago absorbs from the state.

Jackson county surprised me. I figured that with SIU-Carbondale it would have been blue with solid numbers.

Just a guess, but from the map I'd say that many of the Southern Illinois Democrat influence is less from the Chicago area but comes from the St. Louis area.

I'm also going out on a limb here, but I'd guess that the welfare rolls in these counties and the voting history closely parallel each other.

jaholder1971 You have it right. The Dems have been trading stay at home checks for votes for years. With all of the voter fraud in East St Louis I would not be surprised if it showed that you voted for Blego in every precinct there. I'm sure my dead grandmother did.
