Have a chance at a SP101 in .357 with a 3" barrel and factory grips along with Hogue grips. Condition as described is less than 100 rounds through.

Price is $350 total.

Is this something I should jump on? Don't really need a 3" wheelgun - have a 4" 686, but this just feels like a deal to me.

Thank you in advance for the help.

If it's in nice shape, you'd better hurry and buy. Good used SP-101's are fairly scarce. The price is as good as you'll see, I think. Less than I'd expect, especially if the seller has the box and papers.

Around here..the 3" sp commands a premium...if you can find one. Were it me, it would already be in the safe. In my area, youd be looking at 500$ used. And if it was actually in new cindition... Perhaps more.

I picked up a Ruger SP101 with 2 1/4" barrel for $350 that came with the factory grips and hogue also....... It is a deal in my opinion as they are a great little gun and that price can't be beat, new they retail over $500 easily in my neck of the woods....... accurate and easy to carry. I've got a 3" 686 but it's a little bulky for carry in my opinion where as the Sp101 is just about right. I switch between it, my Colt Command and a Sig P239.....

here's a pic of mine....

Thanks guys - its a done deal.

Picked her up - had a tad of play in the cylinder so had my smith give it a quick look over and confirm it was acceptable. Put a box of 38sp, x15 Hornady 38sp +P and a cylinder of .357s. The latter were a handful, but tolerable and I was able to get all 5 shots in a nice group at 25 feet.

Accuracy is very very nice and I can tell a noticeable difference between this one and the 2" I used to own - that extra inch makes a difference. I also noticed a decent difference in recoil as compared to what I remember my 2" SP101 being like...

Broke her down and giving a thorough clean and soak as I type...

I feel like I really got a deal - the gun appears like new and the price tag ($479.99) was still in the box - its funny as it was bought at my local range's shop about 6 months ago :)

Time for a silver dollar pancake :)

Thanks again guys!

You got a great deal IMO. In my area they go for about $500 used, I just picked up a 3in a couple months ago for $480, I love it.

Bought mine for 430 NIB a few months back, that was a good deal. It did shoot high but it is supremely accurate. It has become my primary CCP and for good reason. As for the shooting high problem I called ruger and they sent me a new front site free of charge. I haven't test fired it yet but if my math is correct that should have fixed the problem.

Yikes!

I would have:
a) broken a finger or two reaching for my wallet in a big hurry
b) torn my pants pocket where my wallet was located due to haste
c) both of the above

:)

And I already have a 3" SP101! But for that price, I would have another.

I have the 2.25, but I would love to have the 3". My 2.25 has it's purpose, but I open carry anyhow. Seeing these pics sure makes me want the 3".:(

bullfrogken--- Good point about the extraction, never really thought about that till now.

Jaypo, those look like Eagle Secret Service grips. They're an awesome set of wood for a revolver one intends to conceal. They're small enough to keep the gun trim and compact, but big in the areas needed to fill the hand, ensuring a good grip on the gun.

Yes, they are Eagle Secret Service grips.

However, they suck. They suck bad. The only thing they're good at is taking photos. Look closely at the angle of the grip...it makes the natural point of aim for snap/stressed shots about 5 FEET high at 7 yards. I tried very very hard to make those grips work for me and failed miserably. Mine now sports a set of Hogues.

The other question...nope, not a high gloss stainless, just good lighting. I am far to lazy to polish stainless guns.

Really? I've used those on three different revolvers - a Smith J frame, a Smith K frame, and a Colt D frame - and not experienced anything like that.

Then again at 7 yards I'm not shooting from the hip, or performing a "snap/stressed shot" - however you call it. That distance is far enough out that I'm bringing it up to eye level and using my sights, even if it's just to acquire a quick flash sight picture to verify I'm on target.

At 7 yards I'll get a good eye-level sight picture even with a full size 1911.

Wolf, hows the trigger on yours? I got a 3" about 3 mos. ago, the trigger was gritty, felt rough inside, due to casting. I took mine to a local smith, he put lighter hammer spring{#12}, smoothed out the places the hammer and trigger rode on, polished the parts for me, $60 OTD. Now the DA shoots better than the SA, whole lot smoother action!

Great deal on a great gun. NIB they command $500 around here - and they are worth every penny. I love my 3" Sp101, about as accurate and reliable carry revolver as you can get even in .357! - I'd like to add a 4" .357 & .22LR to the stable.

However, I would snap up a second 3" if I saw it at that price in a heartbeat.

I don't want to derail the thread, so I'll keep it short. At 7 yards, my practice is to begin with gun in ready position, bring to eye level, get a flash sight picture (using the sights) and fire. Shooting from the hip is for teenagers and Hollywood. For ME, the Eagle grips didn't work.

The 3" SP is the gun I grab first when going fishing or for a hike. They are a great choice! As mentioned above, a quick clean up of some of the casting and a spring swap can really improve the action.
